Math - We have worked on sorting pattern blocks by size, color, and shape, using nonstandard units to weigh items on a balance, making and reading bar graphs, and math facts (doubles, plus one, and minus one).
Phonics - Trick words - We have added we, he, she, be, me, you, and your. We finished up our unit on digraphs and had our assessment. We have started the next unit on bonus letters - f, l, and s. We have learned the first of the glued sounds - all.
We made digraph spiders!
Science - We started our first Project Lead The Way unit. Our first unit is light and sound. We started with our introductory story. Our next lesson was going on a light and sound scavenger hunt.
Religion - We read in our Promise Paper the parable of the mustard seed. We then made our own books of the parable. We also looked at real mustard seeds - they are really small! We planted them and we are waiting to see how they grow! The next Bible story we read about in our Promise Paper was the story of the ten lepers. In this story we are reminded of the importance of saying thank you. We learned about the parts of the mass in our book. The story we read from our Children's Bible was the story of Joseph and his coat of many colors. We are in our final week of the virtues and values theme of kindness.
Reading - We have added the "meet with teacher" component to daily 5. Our class is divided into four groups. Each day I meet with at least 2 reading groups - while the rest of the class is building stamina in one of the 5 centers.
Knowing basic sight words is a big part of reading. By the end of first grade, the goal is for the students to know the first 175 sight words. Some of the students already know all 175. Some of the students know only a few words. Some of the students are somewhere in between those. :) The sight words that we use are in our Bee Binder. Please take some time to practice sight words with your student.
Reading with your child for 20 minutes a day is another way for your child to strengthen their reading skills!
Remember, you can access Raz Kids and Vocabulary A-Z at home to practice both reading and spelling.
To access Raz Kids, you can either go to the website or download the app.
The app is Kids A-Z.
Once there, go to kids login.
The teacher name to enter is jsullivan100.
Once in, the student will click on their name.
The password is the apple.
Press go.
The student can click on the purple planet for reading or the yellow plant for spelling. (It says vocabulary)
*If the student would like to choose books on their own, they will click reading room.
In reading room, they have lots of options on how to choose the books they want to read. If they want to read books at their level only, they may press leveled books. Every student has their level entered in the website. This allows them to read books at their level, as well as 2 levels above and below.
*If the student would like to practice their spelling words, they will click on vocabulary. Their assigned spelling list will pop up. Click on the list. From there you can choose phonics, spelling, or vocabulary. Whichever one is chosen, it will bring you to games that use the spelling list.
As always, we have a ton of pictures of the daily 5 centers!
Reading Buddies - We have started meeting with our fourth grade buddies! :)
We celebrated two birthdays
*Conferences - This year you will have a choice of virtual or in person conferences. When you sign up, can you please write in the notes section if you have chosen virtual or in person? That way we can see what you chose. Thank you! :)
Have a great week!
