Spelling - We will not have a spelling list this week. Our phonics unit is still working with the glued sounds -ang, -ing, -ong, and -ung. Our next spelling list will be the week after Thanksgiving break.
Religion - We continue to work on the virtues and values of humility and gratitude. We worked more in our Friendzy unit this week - also about gratitude. Our unit theme is Grow Gratitude. The Bible story we read this week was Jonah and the Whale. Our Promise Paper was from Mark 12:38-44. The theme of the passage is that every gift is important.
Math - We have spent a lot of time learning how to tell time. We are working on telling time to the :00 and the :30. We worked on finding numbers on a hundreds chart. The students had to find numbers, find the the numbers before and after a number, and find numbers between numbers. We worked on coins. This week we focused on dimes and pennies. With that, we also talked about place value - tens and ones. We used base ten blocks and coins to practice. Our Friday lesson was about symmetry. We used pattern blocks to make symmetrical creations. We used a ruler as our line of symmetry.
Writing - We continue to work on our personal narratives. This week we learned how to break our stories down from the big topic, to a smaller topic, to focusing on the small moment. Then we learned how to break our small moment down to a beginning, a middle, and an end. This is challenging for first graders. They worked really hard!
Reading - We work in our daily 5 centers and reading groups every day. I am also doing another round of running records and sight word assessments.
Science - We finished our PLTW unit Light and Sound. The last task was the problem. The problem was to build a communication device using light and/or sound. We were able to test the devices and present them to our class.
Social Studies - Before we start our next PLTW unit, we are going to do a short social studies unit on map skills. Monday, November 11th, was Veteran's Day. We read a Scholastic News about veterans, learned a little bit about what a veteran is, learned a little bit about national symbols, read some stories about national symbols, listened to some patriotic music, and colored cards for veterans.

Have a great week!
