Spelling - We will not have a spelling list this week.
Phonics - We added two more vowel teams - ou and oo.
Religion - We worked on our Promise Paper. The Gospel we read was about Jesus fishing with Simon Peter. We spent most of our Religion time practicing for our first mass. Their hard work paid off! They did an amazing job on Friday!
Writing - We finished our non-realistic fiction stories. We shared them with our kindergarten friends. This week we are going to start working on our how to stories. (Writing to teach and inform)
Science - We finished our PLTW unit Sun, Moon, and Stars. The last lesson is called The Problem. The problem in this unit is called Take Cover! The design problem is to design, create, and evaluate a playground with sheltered areas to protect students from UV exposure. To be successful, UV-detecting beads scattered under the sheltered areas should not turn colors when the structure is exposed to a UV flashlight. Each student made their own structure.
Reading - The students continue to work hard in daily five reading groups and centers. In word work, we are learning about synonyms - words that mean the same thing.
Valentines - The students created amazing Valentine bags! They had a great time exchanging valentines on Friday!
President's Day - Monday is President's Day. We will be reading all about it in our Scholastic News. While talking about President's Day, we discussed where the president lives. I was lucky enough to go on a tour of the White House last summer with my family. I shared pictures of some of the rooms in the White House with the class. They loved looking at the rooms! They were amazed at the big table in the State Dining Room! They also thought it was pretty cool that there was a Red Room, a Blue Room, and a Green Room! My niece's fiance works at the White House as a Military Social Aide. He sent me a case of the books that were used this past Christmas for the White House tours. The students especially loved that there was a cookie recipe in the book. :)
