Happy New Year!
I hope you all had a relaxing break and were able to enjoy the company of family and friends.
Thank you so much for the class gift of scrip! That was so kind of you! I can't wait to do some shopping! :)
A few FYI's from this week -
First Grade Math - This week we worked on adding single digit numbers and then adding a 0 to that number. For example - 3 + 7 = 10 and 30 + 70 = 100. We worked on story problems. In the story problems there were three numbers to add. Each time two of the numbers equaled 10. Then we added 10 + the other number to find the answer. We have been playing shut the box and double shut the box to practice our math facts. Remember to practice those math facts - our first math facts quiz will be next Thursday. Tomorrow we will practice for our end of unit test. Monday we will have the unit 5 test.
Phonics - This week we learned about digraph blends. This is when you combine a digraph with another consonant. We learned three more r-controlled vowels - er, ir, and ur. They are very tricky as they all say the same sound. We worked on making the words with our letter cards, as well as making them with the blank letter cards. Today we worked on writing sentences on our white boards with new and old trick words, as well as vocabulary words.
Reading - One work on writing focus this week has been writing thank you letters for Christmas presents. The other one has been about adjectives - The students are writing adjectives to describe a snowman. Our word work focus this week is compound words. There are quite a few choices in this center - putting plastic eggs together to make compound words, matching games, making compound word snowmen, making a flip book (the outside has two words - foot and ball. The inside has the compound word football), and cutting out words on a worksheet and gluing them into compound words. And of course there's always read to self, read to someone, and listening to stories. I haven't met with any reading groups this week. Instead I did a sight word assessment with every child. Next week we'll start another round of running records. I can't wait to see how much growth the students have had!
Social Studies - We are excited to start social studies. The first thing we did was take a picture walk preview of the book. The kids were really interested in the maps of the world and of the United States. Then we went through the first few pages in our book. We learned how to look through the book on those pages. We learned about schools and classrooms as communities.
Writing - In writer's workshop this week we worked on writing New Years resolutions. The students had to write and illustrate things they want to learn, goals for home and school, and something they can do to make a difference. They then glued their papers onto construction paper and they are hanging above their hooks. They turned out beautiful! As they finished their resolutions, they worked on their writer's workshop stories. We have writer's workshop every Wednesday from 2:00-3:00. We have two grandparent helpers, Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Kelly. We could always use more help with editing, typing, and binding books. If you ever want to join us on Wednesday afternoons, feel free to come in and help us out. :)
Today we had a beautiful mass celebrating Epiphany. After mass our 8th grade buddies stayed with us. We created cards for Catholic Schools Week. (Coming up at the end of January) Here are a few pictures from today -
