Spelling - Due to the short week, we will not have a spelling list this week.

Religion - We worked out of our Religion book one day, we did our Promise Paper on Friday - the rest of the week we spent our Religion time picking mass parts and then practicing mass parts.  We have practiced multiple times in our classroom.  The readers are doing fantastic!  We will head over to church this week to practice a few times.  Our first mass is this week Thursday - October 25th.  It is exciting!  In kindergarten the students had 8th grade buddies helping them.  This is the first time they will be doing it on their own!  :)  When we have mass, the students are allowed to have their parents sit with them or they may go sit with their parents.  ***When we are in charge of mass, however, all of the children need to stay with our class.  The students will be sitting in their specific order that they will be going up to read or do their part.  I also ask that parents do not sit with us on this day so that the transitions of going up and down flow smoothly and the students don't trip over adults in the pew.  The students will be able to see you and talk with you after our mass.  Thank you so much for your understanding of this.  :)
Our mustard seeds are growing!

Phonics - In phonics we have been working on the glued sounds -all, -am, and -an.  We learned how to tap the glued sounds out by holding our fingers together.

Writing - A fun writing project we worked on was making pumpkin stories.  To start, our fourth grade buddies helped us.  We had to follow an outline of what to write about.  The story had to include the pumpkin's name, we had to describe the color or shape, we had to write how many teeth the pumpkin had, we had to use an adjective to describe the pumpkin, and we had to write how the pumpkin made us feel.  Our fourth grade buddies helped us by brainstorming and they helped us spell the words in the rough draft.  After we wrote the rough draft together, we had to write out the story in sentences.  The sentences were up on the Smart Board and the students had to fill in the blanks with what they wrote on their rough draft. The fourth graders left and we all went to lunch.  After lunch the first graders continued on their own.  They had to write out their final draft - with reminders of capital and lower case letters, as well as using punctuation.  After the students wrote their final drafts, they jazzed up their paper by adding color.  The final step was to create the actual pumpkin that they wrote about.  It took a lot of time - and it shows!  The final product turned out great!

Math - In math we worked on doubles equations, writing equations of "some more" stories (addition), shapes that are rectangles, and more ordinal numbers.  We have also been talking about place value.  Every day we talk about the ones place and the tens place.

Our current milk ring count.  The students love counting milk rings!
It has really helped up visualize ones, tens, and hundreds.  Eventually,
we'll even have thousands!  Keep saving those rings for us!

Reading - We continue to work in our guided reading groups and daily five centers.  Our word work center for the month of October is Halloween centers.  We have multiple centers on poetry, word puzzles, finding words inside of the letters in Halloween, Halloween noun sorts, etc.  The students are loving all the choices and doing great work!  In our guided reading groups, we read stories and work on various concepts.  (nouns, adjectives, short vowels, long vowels, vowel teams, r-controlled vowels, spelling patterns, etc.)

Read-Aloud - We finished Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - and then we watched the movie. (The old version).  It was fun to compare and contrast the differences between the book and the movie.  Next we moved on to Junie B. Jones.  There are so many Junie B. books.  Since not everyone has read them, I read aloud the very first one.  The first book in the series tells how everything begins.  In this book she is just starting kindergarten.  Eventually Junie B. moves on the first grade.  So now we are reading the first book where Junie B. is in first grade.  It is called Junie B. Jones - First Grader At Last!

We decorated our classroom for Halloween.  We made pumpkins to hang from the ceiling.
We also made these cool spider webs!

On Halloween we will be trick or treating at the mother house.  (12:15-1:15)  The students will be allowed to change into their costumes before we go there.  When the students come back to school, they will be allowed to leave their costumes on.  Our room mom, Mrs. Jilg, is working on organizing a classroom Halloween celebration for when we come back!  Thank you so much for all your hard work!  :)
