Click on the assignment.
The students can choose either phonics, spelling, or vocabulary.  All choices have different games with the weekly spelling list for them to choose from.

Reading - We just finished a new round of running records.  I also checked all of the students on sight words.  By the end of first grade, the students should know the first 175 sight words.  All of the sight word lists are in your child's Bee Binder for them to practice at home.  Another at home goal is to read with your child at least 20 minutes a day.

We are now back to working in our reading groups, as well as working in the daily 5 centers.  Our centers are read to self, read to someone, listen to reading, work on writing, and word work.  Our word work has been Halloween centers.  Some examples are putting Halloween words in ABC order, making words out of the letters in Halloween, coloring Halloween pictures according to sight words, filling in the blanks on some Halloween poems, writing out the words and making illustrations to the poem Jack 'O Faces, making digraph spiders, and putting all the words of the poem Five Little Pumpkins in order on note cards.  Starting today, November 1st, our word work centers all focus on Thanksgiving.

Raz Kids is a great resource for reading at home.  Each student's page has books at their level.

Then there are some choices.
*If the student would like to read the stories we have read (or will be reading) in our reading groups, they will click on my assignment.
*If the student would like to choose books on their own, they will click reading room.
In reading room, they have lots of options on how to choose the books they want to read.  If they want to read books at their level only, they may press leveled books.  Every student has their level entered in the website.  This allows them to read books at their level, as well as 2 levels above and below.

Phonics - We are working on two new glued sounds - am and -an.  The letter/keyword/sounds are am/ham/am and an/fan/an.  We spend a lot of time working on dictation, sentence writing, vocabulary words, and trick words.

Math - We are working on -1 facts.  We worked on counting money using dimes.  We had a written assessment and a fact assessment.

One day last week, we used our garden for math!  Mrs. Anderson and I picked the bean plants out of the garden.  Our class used the beans for math.  First, we counted how many beans we picked.  (116!)  Each student then chose a bean.  We measured our beans in inches.  Our longest bean pod was 10 inches.  Next, we opened our pods and counted how many seeds were inside.  In the beans that our class chose, we came up with 60 seeds!  The most that was in one pod was 6.  We also cut a few seeds apart to see what they looked like on the inside.  We saved many seeds - and we will plant them in the garden in the spring.

Speaking of our garden, we also harvested the celery last week.  It was a little strong.  Some kids liked it - some did not.  :)

Religion - Our Friendzy unit is "Love at All Times".  We had a lesson about how love has a ripple effect on others - both big things and small things.  We learned that it's hard to love when you are HALT - Hungry, Angry, Lonely, or Tired - but that we can keep working to love.
We are also working on a clock that has many emotions on it.  Each "time" on the clock reminds us to love at all times!
In our Promise Paper we learned about the story of Bartimaeus.  He was blind and healed by Jesus.  After we read the Promise Paper, we made our own books of the Gospel story.
Today, November 1st, is All Saints Day.  We went to church where our fifth grade class shared a presentation of saints with us!

Science - In our weather unit, we are learning about the water cycle.  We also started tracking the temperature each day.  This Friday, Steve Beylon, a meteorologist from channel 2, will be zooming with our class from 10:00 - 11:00 to talk with us about weather!

Buddies - We got together with our fourth grade buddies.  We worked on reading, writing, and puzzles together!

Have a great week!
