We do not have school this Friday.  So we will again have 2 weeks to practice the words.

Reading - This week our word work centers will start focusing on plurals - s, es, and irregular.
This week we will be starting our final round of running records.

Our reading goal is to read at least 20 minutes a night at home.  Sight words, which are in the Bee Binder, are another thing students can practice at home.  By the end of first grade, the goal for the first graders is to know 175 sight words.

Raz Kids is a great way to practice reading and spelling.
To access Raz Kids, you can either go to the website or download the app.

Once there, go to kids login.
The teacher name to enter is jsullivan100.
Once in, the student will click on their name.
The password is the apple.
Press go.
The student can now click on the purple planet for reading or the yellow plant for spelling.  (It says vocabulary)
Then there are some choices.
*If the student would like to read the stories we have read (or will be reading) in our reading groups, they will click on my assignment.
*If the student would like to choose books on their own, they will click reading room.

In reading room, they have lots of options on how to choose the books they want to read.  If they want to read books at their level only, they may press leveled books.  Every student has their level entered in the website.  This allows them to read books at their level, as well as 2 levels above and below.
*If the student would like to practice their spelling words, they will click on vocabulary.

If you are using Clever, this website is linked to our class Clever page.  The Clever QR code is in your child's Bee Binder.  Once you are in clever and you click on Raz Kids, you just have to put in our class username - jsullivan100.

Science - We have been busy learning about organisms!  We have now received all of our organisms.  In the aquariums we have two types of water plants, snails, and guppies.  In the terrariums we have pine tree seedlings, moss, pill bugs, and millipedes.  We have been learning about all the organisms - and then comparing and contrasting them.  Our plant seeds that we have been growing are ready to come home.  We have been keeping a picture record of how our plants have looked since we first planted them.

Religion - We had been working on the Friendzy theme I Am Chosen.  This week we will be switching to our final theme Friendship is a Gift.  We are also down to our last 2 Promise Papers!  Last week we attended adoration, May Crowning, and the living rosary.

Math - We are currently working on +9 math facts.  We have learned that they are very close to +10 facts - and we just have to think of the +10 fact and subtract one.

Writing - We have finished our how to stories.  We shared them with kindergarten.  :)  The students did a great job writing about how to either do something, be something, or make something!  The stories had to have at least 4 steps, trasition words (such as first, next, then, last),  a materials list, a title page and illustration, good spacing, punctuation, capital letters in the correct places, wow pictures (sometimes including labels, captions, or steps), and use great describing.  Mrs. Anderson calls those adjective juicy details!  The students worked very hard on these stories!

Phonics - We have learned about words with 2 syllables where one syllable is closed and one syllable is a v-e.  We learned the "ic" rule.  If a word has 2 syllables and it says "ic", you spell it with -ic.  If the word is one syllable, you spell it with -ick.  Some one syllable examples are pick and sick.  Some 2 syllable examples are frantic and plastic.  This week we are starting to work on 2 syllable words with the suffixes -s, -ed, and -ing.

Happy Mother's Day!

The students worked hard all last week on Mother's Day.  We painted pots and then we planted petunias in them.  All week the students worked on multiple activities for you.  They should have given you a folder full of goodies - such as cards, waterfall books, and my favorite - the fill in the blank sheets of things about my mom!  I hope you enjoyed, felt special, and felt all the love from your child on your special day!

Have a great week!
