Spelling - We will not have a spelling list this week.  Next week we will have a list of words with the suffix -es.  The students have asked me to send the list home so they can start practicing.  :)  The list is also already loaded into Vocabulary A-Z (Spelling City).

Phonics - We worked on 2 syllable words (both closed and v-e) that have a suffix -s, -ed, and -ing.  We are now learning about when to use the suffix -es.  You use the suffix -es when a base word ends in x, ch, sh, s, and z.

Reading - We continue to work in our daily five centers and reading groups.  This will be our last week of homophones for word work.  The students have really enjoyed the homophone centers!  This week we added a new center - Fantastic Facts!  The students look through a non-fiction book, find a fact, write it down, and illustrate it!  In the next week or so we will start working on our end of the year running records.

Social Studies - We are up to 41 states and capitals!

Science - We continue learning about organisms.  Last week we worked on comparing and contrasting our water plants and land plants.  We read a story about four amazing plants - the giant water lily, the rafflesia, the venus flytrap, and the saguaro cactus.  We finished up our planting cards and took our seeds home.  We continue to monitor and observe the organisms in our terrariums and our aquariums.

Math - In math we worked on polygons, subtracting 10 from a number, and subtraction problems with a difference of 2.

Religion - We worked on our Promise Paper.  We are starting a new virtue - orderliness.  We had a church tour with Brother Jacob.  On Friday we celebrated May Crowning.

We celebrated three birthdays - Serenity, Flynn, and Eliana

Phonics - Last we we finished up unit 12.  Our focus was 2 syllable words with a closed syllable and a v-e.  We also learned about -ic rule.  If you have a one syllable word, it is spelled with a ck.  Example - pick.  If it is a 2 syllable word, it is spelled with just a c.  Example - panic.  This week we are focusing on 2  syllable words with the suffixes s, ed, and ing.

Reading - We continue to work in reading groups and daily five centers.  Our word work focus is homophones.

Social Studies - We are now up to 30 states and capitals!

Writing - We are finishing up our April journals, starting our May journals, working in Fundations journals, and working in writer's workshop.

Math - In math we worked on math subtraction facts that had a difference of one, identifying fractional parts of a whole, and we reviewed math facts.

Science - Science was very exciting last week.  We worked with two more organisms - pill bugs and bess beetles.  We learned facts about them, compared and contrasted them, and added them to our terrariums.  We continue to care for our growing plants.  We also had a virtual visit from the NEW Zoo.  They shared two animals with us - a boa constrictor and a rabbit.

Religion - We worked on our Promise Paper, we finished up our virtue cards about humility, we learned about the seven sacraments, and we had a visit from Brother  Jacob.

We celebrated two Birthdays - Adalynn and Chailoh

We updated our class picture!  :)

Have a great week!
