Phonics - We have learned about digraphs and we have learned about blends.  Now we have learned that when you put a digraph with a consonant it is called a digraph blend!  We have now learned all of the letter/keyword/sounds for the r-controlled vowels.  (bossy r)

Reading - During daily five we are working on another round of running records and sight word checks.  The students continue to work in their centers daily.

Math - In math we have been working on math facts - doubles plus one.  The class is getting really good at knowing which number to double and how to find the answer!

Religion - Each week we read the Sunday Gospel and discuss it in our promise paper.  Last week we learned about Jesus' friends - John the Baptist, Andrew, and Simon Peter.  We talked about being a good friend to others.  This week we continue to talk about Jesus' friends.  The Gospel this week was at the Sea of Galilee with four fishermen - Andrew, James, Simon Peter and John.  Last week our theme was Jesus invites us to follow him.  This week the theme is Jesus invites us to listen to him.  This week we then talked about being a good listener.  

Our virtues and values this month are sincerity and perseverance.  We talk about these virtues throughout the day, in addition to our cards that we discuss what the virtues look like and sound like.

We will be working on Friendzy - our theme is Bounce Back.  We will be learning about being resilient.

We also spent some time at adoration last week.

Writing - We are working on our How-To stories.  We have worked on deciding what to write about, what materials we will need, and transition words.  (First, then, next, last)  We are in the process of writing our stories and illustrating.  We are making sure to add juicy details to both our writing and our illustrating.  

Science - We have been learning about the stars, constellations, and the planets.

We LOVE having Sassy and Morgan visit our classroom!

*Next week is Catholic Schools Week.  We will be having fun dress up days throughout the week.  Friday will be Class Theme Dress.  Our class theme will be.....sports!  The students can wear jerseys, 

t-shirts, etc. from any type of sports team.

Reading - Our current word work focus is compound words.  A compound word is when you have a word made out of two words like rainbow.  rain + bow = rainbow

Phonics - We are starting to learn about consonant blends.  A blend is when you have 2 consonants together and your are able to hear each sound.  For example, in the word task , the blend is at the end - sk.  We are also starting to learn about r-controlled vowels - or the bossy r.  An r-controlled vowel is when you have a vowel followed by the letter r.  

Math - In math, we have been working on two digit addition.  We are focusing on adding without regrouping, but are being exposed to how to do regrouping.  We are learning about place value - the ones, the tens, and the hundreds.  

Religion - We have been learning about Epiphany.  We read about the three kings in our Promise Paper.  Mrs. Curran also brought in her gold, frankincense, and myrrh to show us! Our newest virtue and value is sincerity.

Writing - We have started our next writing unit - writing how-to stories.  We started with research.  We learned what how-to books are and read some mento texts.  We moved to planning.  We learned that how-to books can be about something you can do, make, or be.  We brainstormed ideas.  Then we wrote out our ideas.

Science - This week we will get back to our sun, moon, and stars unit.  This week we will be learning about the moon.

*STAR Testing - This week Wednesday we will take the STAR reading test.  Next week Wednesday we will take the STAR math test.
