Spelling - This week we will not have a spelling list due to the half day on Friday.

Religion - This week we worked out of our Religion book.  We talked about the ten commandments and we starting discussing the seven sacraments.  We learned about saints.  Fr. McElroy gave us a great acronym - SAINT = Someone who Always Inspires Neat Things.  On Friday we worked on our Promise Paper.  We learned about Sister Katharine Drexel and made an Our Father prayer book.

Math - In math we worked on doubles, math wrap ups with doubles, patterns, and using a balance to weigh and compare items.  We took a written assessment and I did oral individual assessments.  While we were working on individual assessments we worked in math centers.

Phonics - In phonics we are working on words that have suffix -s.  We are learning about saying the base word first, and then the base word and the suffix.  This helps with spelling.  (For example, the base word of rocks is rock and the suffix is s.  We say rock - rocks.  If you just say rocks, the -cks sounds like x and the student may spell the word rox.)

Reading - Last week was the last week of Halloween word work centers.  This week we will start Thanksgiving word work centers.  Some of the choices are making words out of the letters in Thanksgiving, Thanksgiving word puzzles, Thanksgiving poems (cloze activities, putting poems in the correct order, etc.), thankful turkeys, and thankful letters.  Every day in reading the students work in the daily five centers while one group is in a guided reading group.  This week on Halloween we read the story Scary Party.  We brought the book to life by reading it in partners of two and making our parts "dance in the dark" as the book says.  :)

Handwriting - We worked on putting question marks and exclamation points on the correct lines and forming them the correct way.  We also reviewed the letters Aa, Oo, and Dd.

Writing - We started writing turkey stories with our fourth grade buddies.  We will finish them up this week.

Halloween - We had fun on Halloween.  We went trick or treating at the mother house.  We got to perform our song "The Twelve Days of Halloween".  The kids did great!  The sisters loved it!  We had a fun Halloween celebration in our classroom when we returned to school!  Thank you Miles' mom, Owen's mom, and Bennett's mom for organizing our Halloween celebration!

Religion - We spent last week practicing for our mass.  This week we will work out of our Religion books, learn about saints, make cards for the sisters at the mother house, and learn about the weekly Gospel in the Promise Paper.  Reminder - Mass this week will be on Thursday since it is All Saints Day.

Reading - This is the final week that all of the word work centers will be Halloween themed.  The students have done a great job with all the Halloween centers!  The students are doing great work in both daily 5 centers and guided reading groups.

Bennett working on a noun word work.  He had to color words
either red, yellow, or blue depending on if the word was a person,
a place, or a thing.

Kenzy and Luke - Busy book makers!

The Twelve Days of Halloween!  We learned a parody of The Twelve Days of Christmas.
The students read it, illustrated it, sang it, and performed their version for other classes.
Sister Carolyn thought it was so great, she asked the first graders to perform it at the
Mother House on Wednesday when we go trick or treating!  :)

Science - In science we learned about the water cycle.  We learned the words precipitation, condensation, and evaporation.  We did a puddle experiment.  We put water in a bowl and drew what the water level looked like each day.  It took 3 days - and then all of the water evaporated out of the bowl.

Phonics - We are starting to learn about base words and suffixes.  Currently we are learning about suffix -s.  The base word is the main part of the word.  The suffix is the word ending.  In the word rocks, rock is the base word and s is the suffix.

Math - In math we have been talking a lot about doubles.  We made flash cards of all the doubles from 0+0 to 9+9.  We have been learning about different shapes.  After a lesson about shapes, we took some time to make our own creations out of pattern blocks.  The students loved it!

Kindergarten Buddies - Mrs. Anderson asked us for some help.  She asked the first graders to show the kindergarteners how to do some daily 5 centers.  She wanted us to teach them the website Epic on the their computers.  She also wanted us to help them learn how to do some word work centers.  The first graders loved being their big helpers!

Class Book - We read the Eric Carle book Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?  We then made our own version of the book called Children, Children, What Do You see?  Each student created a page.  For example, the first page says Owen, Owen, what do you see?  I see Bennett looking at me.  It turned out amazing!  Here are the pictures we used to create the book.

Reminders -

Wednesday we are going trick or treating at the mother house.  The students may bring their costumes to change into after lunch.  The students are allowed to stay in their costumes as we will be having a Halloween party when we return.

Mass this week will be on Thursday due to All Saints Day.

Have a great week! :)
