Monday we just started working on unit 11 in Fundations.  The v-e syllable is a new concept.  We will take two weeks to practice these words again.  The test will be on Friday, April 1st.

The spelling lists are always uploaded into Raz Kids on Vocabulary A-Z.  To log onto our page, the students will need our class code - jsullivan 100.

Phonics - We have just introduced the long vowel sounds.  The short vowel sounds are worked on during preschool, kindergarten, and the first ten units of first grade.  Monday we started unit 11 and have now introduced the long vowel sounds as well.  With the new unit, we also have a new syllable type - it is called vowel-consonant-e syllable.  Our short name is v-e.  (These are words that end with a silent e.  The silent e makes the vowel in the word say the long sound.)

Reading - Our new word work focus is synonyms and antonyms.  We have multiple centers that the students are working on to learn about synonyms (words that mean the same thing) and antonyms (words that mean the opposite).
We continue to work in reading groups, as well as the daily 5 centers every day.

Our reading goal is to read at least 20 minutes a night at home.  Sight words, which are in the Bee Binder, are another thing students can practice at home.  By the end of first grade, the goal for the first graders is to know 175 sight words.

Raz Kids is a great way to practice reading and spelling.
To access Raz Kids, you can either go to the website or download the app.

Once there, go to kids login.
The teacher name to enter is jsullivan100.
Once in, the student will click on their name.
The password is the apple.
Press go.
The student can now click on the purple planet for reading or the yellow plant for spelling.  (It says vocabulary)
Then there are some choices.
*If the student would like to read the stories we have read (or will be reading) in our reading groups, they will click on my assignment.
*If the student would like to choose books on their own, they will click reading room.

In reading room, they have lots of options on how to choose the books they want to read.  If they want to read books at their level only, they may press leveled books.  Every student has their level entered in the website.  This allows them to read books at their level, as well as 2 levels above and below.
*If the student would like to practice their spelling words, they will click on vocabulary.

If you are using Clever, this website is linked to our class Clever page.  The Clever QR code is in your child's Bee Binder.  Once you are in clever and you click on Raz Kids, you just have to put in our class username - jsullivan100.

The Building For Kids - After 2 years of having to cancel, we are finally able to return to the Building For Kids!  Our field trip will be on Friday, April 29th.  This will be an all day field trip.  We'll be leaving school around 8:15 and returning around 2:30.  Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade will be going on this field trip.  We will need chaperones.  To chaperone you will need to be Virtus trained and have a background check.  Please let us know if you are interested.  :)

Have a great week!

Math - In math we have been working on place value - the tens place and the ones place.  We have been using base ten blocks to count.  We also have been putting groups of items into tens and extras (ones) to count quicker.

Science - We switched from solids to liquids in our Einstein Kit.  We learned about these properties of solids -
color
opacity (opaque or transparent)
feel
viscosity and fluidity
buoyancy in water
miscibility

We had four liquids that we tested - water, green shampoo, vegetable oil, and glue.  After we tested all of the properties, we got two new solids to test - corn syrup and red shampoo.
One of our favorite lessons were testing for fluidity/viscosity.  We did drop races.  We found out that water was the fastest of our liquids.
Our other favorite lessons were testing for buoyancy and miscibility.  We found out water and oil don't mix.  We made a wave bottle out of water and oil.  We also found out that corn syrup didn't mix with water.  We made a three layer bottle.  Corn syrup on the bottom, water in the middle, and oil on top!

Social Studies - We read out of our Scholastic News paper.  Last week we learned about presidents for Presidents Day.

Religion - Our Promise Paper was about Jesus wanting us to be kind.  The Bible verse we read discussed the golden rule - treat others the way you want to be treated.  We took out the kindness virtues and values cards and went through them.  Our Friendzy theme is to watch your words.  We learned a great acrostic about thinking before you speak.
T - Is it true?
H - Is it helpful?
I - Is it inspiring?
N - Is it necessary?
K - Is it kind?

This week Wednesday Lent begins.

Phonics - We are continuing to add more vowel teams.  By the end of this week we will have up to ue/ew.  This is the most challenging row of vowel teams.  There are 4 vowel teams and 7 sounds.

Have a great week!

Science - We have tested all of our properties of solids.  We worked on sorting by color and shape.  We also tested for stacking, rolling, sliding, buoyancy, and magnetism.  This week we will start learning about the properties of liquids.

Phonics - We have been learning about vowel teams.  By the end of this week - we will lave learned up to the oa, oe, ow row.

We are also focusing on closed syllables.  We are working on words that have closed syllables and a suffix s.

Religion - We spent last week practicing, and practicing, and practicing for our mass.  :)  I am so proud of how well our students did!  Thank you for practicing at home with the readers!

Have a great week!
