Phonics - Last week we worked on 2 syllable words (both closed and v-e syllables) that had a suffix s, ed, or ing.  This week we are learning about when a plural has a suffix s vs. es.

Writing - We continued working on cinquain poems.  This week we made personal cinquain poems - poems about ourselves.

Religion - Our new virtues and values for the month of May are orderliness and modesty.

We worked in our Promise books.  We talked about saints.  We learned about the newest saint, Saint Carlos Acutis.  On Thursday we watched live as we found out who our new pope is - Pope Leo IV.  We have been learning about The Shrine and Adele Brise.  We are excited for our field trip!

We loved our field trip to the Farm Wisconsin Discovery Center!

Happy Mother's Day!

The first graders worked so hard on Mother's Day writings all week!  They had lots of choices on what to make for their moms - They chose from cards, waterfall books, cinquain poems, acrostic poems, and fill in the blank stories!

Have a great week!

Phonics - We finished up unit 12 and had our unit test.  This week we will start unit 13.  Unit 13 continues talking about 2 syllable words with either 2 closed syllables or a closed syllable and a v-e syllable.  Now we are adding a suffix to our words - either suffix s, suffix ed, or suffix ing.

Writing - We have been working on cinquain poems.  A cinquain poem has five lines.  The first line is one word - and it is the title, the second line is 2 words that describe the title, the third line is 3 action words about the title, the fourth line is 4 thoughts about the title, and the fifth line is one word - a synonym about the title.

Science - We worked on our project.  The project was making a travel brochure for each environment - the Arctic, the African Savanna, the Amazon Rainforest, and the Sahara Desert.  The brochure had to include a traveler and give one adaption the person would use for the four animal adaptations we learned about.  (locomotion, camouflage, protection, and food)  Our fourth grade buddies helped us with this project.

Flat Stanley - We received more letters and pictures from our families and friends!  We love hearing about the adventures Flat Stanley went on!

Typing - We are learning how to type!  We started together as a class working on the home row.  Now the students are going at their own pace, making their way through more letters.  We use a great website called DanceMat Typing.  It is a free resource.  If the students have access a table with a keyboard or a computer they can practice at home as well.  We are working on practicing with our fingers in the correct spaces.

Our Adopt-A Cow Spot - Wednesday Schleis Farms in Kewaunee had a live chat with schools.  We were able to listen to Farmer Tasha speak, see Spot, and get an update on her growth!

The Chickens!

Our Potato Plants - Once again this year we planted potato plants.  This week we were able to harvest our plants.  Our potatoes were tiny, but we counted over 20 potatoes!

Congratulations to our April BOLT award winners for modeling self control and moderation!
