Reading - We are learning about the daily 5. Daily 5 is our way of working in reading groups and reading centers. The five centers are Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, Work on Writing, and Word Work. After we are introduced to all 5 centers, we will practice working in all 5 centers - building our stamina. After we have mastered the correct center behaviors, we will add reading groups to the mix.
Phonics - We are reviewing the letter sounds of the consonants, vowels, and digraphs. We are working on CVC words. (Consonant-Vowel-Consonant)
Math - We have been learning about doubles. (5+5=10, 9+9=18, etc.) We have learned a fun song called The Doubles Rap and we have been playing a lot of games to practice the doubles. Slides and Ladders is one of our favorites!
We have also been learning about shapes and working with our pattern blocks.
Science - We are starting our first PLTW science unit. Our first unit is called Light and Sound.
Handwriting / Writing - In first grade we practicing writing our letters. Our goals are to write the letters the correct way, form the letters the correct way, use the correct spaces for the letters, know when to use lower case vs. capital letters, and to write neatly. So far we have worked on letters Aa and Bb. Our first writing unit will be coming soon.
