Phonics - We are learning about different syllable types.  We are currently learning about closed syllables.  Closed syllables have 1 vowel, the vowel is short, and the vowel is closed off at the end by a consonant, a blend, a digraph, or a digraph blend.

Reading - In word work, we are learning about contraction words.  Contractions are 2 words - squished together to make 1 word.  :)  Some examples are can't, I'm and we're.  We work hard in our reading groups and centers daily!

Religion - We read from our Promise Paper every week, we have been working in our Friendzy book, we learn about our virtues and values (currently learning about obedience), but we are now focusing on something new - Our First Mass!  We are so excited to lead the mass on Friday, February 23rd.  Please continue to practice reading parts at home.  The students are doing a great job reading their parts!
This week Wednesday marks the first day of Lent.  We will go to mass on Ash Wednesday.  We will also start going to Stations of the Cross.  Our first Stations will be this Friday, February 16th.

Science - We are coming to the end of our PLTW unit - Sun, Moon, and Stars.  Last week we built a model of something on a playground.  We used the PLTW design process to build our structures.  The goal was to build something that would give the playground protection from the UV rays.  We tested out structures by placing UV detecting beads in our structure.  We then used a blue light to see if the structure protected the beads from the UV rays.  The first grade scientists had great ideas!

Math - In math we have been adding 2 digit numbers.  Previously we had done this without regrouping.  Today we focused on adding 2 digit numbers with regrouping.  We have been learning about how to compare numbers using greater than, less than, and equal to.  We've also had lessons on place value and graphing.

Writing - We have finished up our how-to stories.  We will be sharing them this week.  They are amazing!  :)

Valentines - Remember we are exchanging valentines tomorrow, February 13th.  Please remember to have your students bring their valentines to school with them.  Our bags are made and ready to go!

Some fun pictures ~

This squirrel visited us almost every day last week!  We have a bird feeder on our window.  The squirrel has learned to jump from the tree and land in the bird feeder to have a snack.  :)
