Spelling - This week we start spelling!  We will have a list of 10 words that come from our fundations unit.  The list will go home one Monday.  Practice the spelling words with your student throughout the week.  On Friday, we will have a spelling test.  Our first list is digraphs.

Reading - The students are getting more independent in their centers.  It's still a big thing to work on!  I am hoping this will be our last week of testing and that we'll be able to start small groups next week.

Phonics - Our current focus is digraphs.  We have been working on tricks words, digraph words, and word and sentence dictation.

Writing - We continue to work on letter formation and letter spacing.  We focus on where to start our letters and the correct lines to write our letters.  We are close to finishing up our first journal booklet.  We are working on writing more details to our stories.

Math - We finished up our first unit - which focused on addition strategies.  We have now started the second unit which focuses on subtraction strategies.  So far we have worked with number lines and practiced counting back.  In our addition strategies unit we practiced doubles.  At first they were challenging, but now we are doubles experts!

Science - In our light and sound unit we have started learning about light.  We have learned about reflection and shadows.  We worked in light centers.  We used our hands for shadows.  We used mirrors for reflection.  We used color cards to change the light color.  We used refraction grating to find the colors of the rainbow in the light.

Clare brought in this guitar to talk about sound and vibration.

Religion - Our Bible story was a story of forgiveness - Joseph and the Coat of Many Colors.  The students enjoyed coloring Joseph and his coat after we read and discussed the story.  We also worked out of our Promise Books as we continued discussing the 7 sacraments and specifically Baptism.  We have been practicing the Guardian Angel Prayer.  We found out from Father Turba that Friday was Guardian Angel Day!  And thanks to Mrs. Peterson, we enjoyed cupcakes Friday afternoon.  Father Turba's homily on Friday included a story from his childhood about cupcakes...and he intertwined guardian angels into his story...and told us that cupcakes can remind us of our guardian angels.
