Phonics - In phonics we are working on 2 syllable words with both a closed syllable and a v-e syllable.  We are learning where we break apart the syllables.  We continue to gain more trick words.  We have been doing a lot of dictation.

Religion - We have been very busy practicing for our mass!  The students did a great job!  We have been focusing on Lent. This last week we learned about Holy Week.  We finished our last Brother Francis Lent video.  We continue to focus on the virtues and values of temperance and moderation.  We also finished up our Lent journals.  Our final entry was to write and draw about how you think God sees you.

Writing - We worked on our first acrostic poems.  The word we chose was spring.

Science - In animal adaptations we continue to learn about four environments and plants and animals that live in those environments.  The environments are the arctic, the desert, the rainforest, and the savanna.

Reading - The students continue to work in centers and we meet in reading groups.  Our word work focus is homophones.  (Words that sound alike, but are spelled different and mean something different.)

Our Flat Stanleys are starting to return from their adventures!

Have a great week!

Phonics - We continued to work on the v-e syllable with suffix s.  This week we will start learning about 2 syllable words with 2 closed syllables.

Religion - We start the week out with Stations of the Cross.  Every day during Lent we watch a Brother Francis video.  We worked on the Friendzy unit "Practice Makes Permanent".  The key verse is from Philippians 4:13 - I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. We learned about healthy habits vs. unhealthy habits.  We have spent much of our Religion time practicing for our mass on April 16th.  This week's Lent journal entry was "Draw a picture or write something about someone or something you need to be patient with, even when it's hard." In April we are focusing on the virtues and values of temperance and moderation.

Math - In math we worked on partners of 10 with subtraction.  We also worked on using rulers to measure in inches.

Reading - We continue to work in reading groups and centers, practice sight words, and practice writing.

Writing - This week we started a new writing unit - poetry.  We are going to learn about different types of poetry.  The first type we are learning about is an acrostic poem.  This week we started with research.  Next week we will practice writing acrostic poems.

This week we also worked on our Flat Stanley project.  We worked on our letters and addressing our envelopes.  This was a big, unknown skill for the first graders!  They worked so hard on it!  Our Flat Stanleys went out in the mail this week and we are so excited to have our friends and families receive them!  We can't wait to start hearing about all of Stanley's adventures!

We also wrote a lot of cards this week!  We wrote a birthday card for Mrs. Anderson, a thank you card for Mr. Beylon, and an appreciation card for Mrs. K!

We had a great visit from meteorologist Steve Beylon!  He does an amazing job talking to the students about weather!  To see our class, you can go to the website www.wbay.com/classroom or look on his Facebook page (Steve Beylon WBAY).
