Phonics - We have been working on 2 syllable words.  First we focused on words that had 2 closed syllables.  Now we are focusing on words that have 1 closed syllable and 1 v-e syllable.

Science - We completed the Animal Adaptations Unit.  The final problem was called "Traveling Shoes".  Using the design process, the task was to
design the ideal shoe for adventure in a new environment. Student design should showcase:
  1. A minimum of three adaptations – one camouflage, one protection, and one locomotion.

  2. Students should be able to explain how each aspect of their design relates to adapting to the specific environment.

Arctic

Sahara Desert

Amazon Rainforest

African Savanna

Reading - We continue to meet in reading groups and work in centers.  Our current word work center focus is homophones.  (Words that sound alike, but are spelled different and mean something different.  Ex. see and sea)

Math - In math we have worked on measuring using inches, fractions such as 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, and 1/6, greater than, less than, and equal to, and dividing into equal parts.

Religion - This week we will be working on our final Promise Paper of the year!  Last week our Promise Paper was from the Gospel of John - "I am the vine and you are the branches."  We continue to focus on our virtues and values.  We are currently learning about loyalty and modesty.  Our BOLT trait in May is service.

Writing - We are working on a poetry unit.  We learned about acrostic poems.  We created a spring acrostic poem together.  The students were then tasked with coming up with their own words to create an acrostic poem.  The theme was spring / summer.  The words to choose from were sunshine, butterfly, and flowers.

Thomas created an extra acrostic poem about the ocean

Have a great week!
