Phonics - We continue to work on the v-e syllable.  This week we will add the suffix s to the v-e.

Writing - We have started working on how-to stories.  We are in the research and planning stages.

Math - We have been working on adding two number together.  We have learned three different methods to do that.  We have learned to use the hundred chart, how to use a quick picture to add, and how to make a ten to add.

Religion - We have been working thorough our Promise books.  We are almost finished!  Last week we talked about praying and Saints.  We had our BOLT Awards.  Declan and Koltin won the award for showing prudence - doing the right thing at the right time.  In April we will work on courage and moderation.

Reading - Our word work centers are now focusing on synonyms and antonyms.  The students continue to work on reading and writing during our daily 5 time.

Science - In our PLTW Unit Animal Adaptations we investigated the different adaptions we are learning about - camouflage, food, locomotion, and protection.

For the camouflage adaptation investigation we had a patterned paper.  We put green paper butterflies on the paper and patterned butterflies on the paper.  We set the timer for 20 second to see which butterfly we could find more of.  Of course the patterned ones were harder for find!

For the food adaptation investigation we had three tools - a spoon, a tweezers, and a clothespin.  Each tool represented a different type of birds beak.  We then had three items that represented types of food a bird would eat.  The items were marbles, toothpicks, and cut up straws.  Those items were in shapes similar to seeds, worms, or insects.  We set the timer for 20 seconds and we tried each food with each tool.  This helped us learn which type of beak was best for each food source.

We celebrated Mrs. Anderson's birthday!

Have a great week!
