Phonics - In phonics we are reviewing letter formations learned in kindergarten, writing all the letters of the alphabet correctly, and practicing CVC words. We are sounding them out, tapping them, and writing them. We are starting to get trick words. We had our first sentence dictation.
Reading - In reading we are going through all of the steps of how we do reading groups and centers in first grade. We use the daily 5 method. The students learn to independently work in 5 centers - read to self, read to someone, listen to reading, work on writing, and word work. So far we have introduced read to self, read to someone, and listen to reading. We have been practicing how to work in the centers. We call that building stamina.
Handwriting - We have been practicing how to form the letters correctly, how to write the letters on the correct lines, how to use good spacing, how to make the letters the correct size, and how to write neatly.
Writing - We start the year with writing in our journals. Our journal have sentence starters. We need to finish the sentence and then add our own sentences. We draw pictures to go with our journal entries.
Religion - We have been reading out of our Children's Bible. We have been focusing on the creation story in Genesis. We are illustrating our creation books. We also started working out of our Promise Books. This week we will also start Friendzy.
Math - We are learning about adding. So far we have worked on using cubes and red/yellow counters as manipulatives. We are working on addition equations.
Science - We are starting our first PLTW science unit - light and sound.
Enjoy some pictures of us enjoying some veggies from our garden~
