Spelling - This week we will have our first spelling test! Our lists come from our phonics program Fundations. Our first spelling list will be words that have digraphs.
Digraphs
such
fish
thin
rich
thud
shop
quick
dock
thick
shock
Phonics - In phonics we are working on words that have digraphs. A digraph is two consonants together that make one sound.
Reading - As the students work on building their stamina working in their centers, we have been working on our beginning of the year assessments.
Religion - We have finished our first Friendzy unit - We Need Each Other. The key verse we focused on was "Therefore encourage one another and build each other up!" (Thessalonians 5:11)
Writing and Handwriting - We continue to write in our journals. We are working on starting with capital letters and using punctuation at the end of our sentences. We are working on only using capital letters when needed. We are making sure to add on to our stories - to add the juicy, juicy details. :) We continue to practice writing neatly, forming the letters correctly, putting the letters on the correct lines, and using good spacing.
We also continue to read out of our Children's Bible. Our most recent story that we read was Noah's Ark. We also talked about the story of Noah's Ark in our Promise books. We had our first Adoration session. We attend Adoration once a month.
Math - In math we are learning strategies to add. We have been using 10 frames to show that making a 10 can help you figure out a problem.
This ten frame shows 9+ 5 = 14. It also shows that 10+4=14.
The next strategy we worked on was doubles. Doubles are problems where both partners are the same. (2+2, 8+8, 6+6, etc.)
Science - In our PLTW unit Light and Sound we learned that sound travels in waves. We found out that when a tuning fork is close enough to another tuning fork, the vibrations will make the second tuning fork vibrate and make sounds. We did an experiment with cup phones. We learned that when the string is tight, the vibration allows us to hear through the cup phone. We learned that if the string is loose or if we hold the string - it does not vibrate - and we cannot hear through the cup phone.
We finished reading the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. We were able to then watch the movie. We learned that there were many differences between the book and the movie.
We celebrated Chiara's birthday
Our therapy dogs Sassy and Morgan returned! Our first visit was with Morgan and Miss Sue
