Phonics - In phonics we are working on CVC words  (Consonant-Vowel-Consonant) and digraphs.  The digraphs we are working on are sh, ch, th, wh, and ck. We have started working on dictation.  I say a sound, the students write the sound.  I say a word, the students write the word.  I say a sentence, the students write the sentence.

We have also started something new at Holy Cross in addition to Fundations.  Our new program is called Heggerty.  It takes about 12 minutes every day.  We go over things like rhyming, initial sounds. final sounds, blending words, and chunking words.

Reading - This week we learned about our last 2 centers - work on writing and word work.  We practiced building stamina with each of them.  This upcoming week we will be practicing all five of them.

Writing and Handwriting - In addition to work on writing in daily 5, we also take time to write in our journals.  In handwriting we focus on letter formation, as well as writing the letters on the correct lines.

Religion - We are just about finished with our Creation books.  The next Bible story we read was the story of Adam and Eve.  We also started our first Friendzy unit.  Our first Friendzy theme is "We Need Each Other".

Math - In math we are learning different ways to add.  Last week we worked on counting on, making a ten, using a number line, and using ten frames.

Science - Our PLTW unit is light and sound.  In activity 1 we went on a scavenger hunt.  We looked for items in our classroom that make light and sound.  We worked on sound centers in activity 2.  We were able to practice making sound with containers and rubber bands, tuning forks, stethoscopes, and metal water bottles with varying amounts of water.
