Reading  - We continue to meet in small groups every day in Daily 5.  This week in word work the students have lots of choices.  They can make thankful turkeys (make a handprint turkey and write on it what you are thankful for), put the words together on the pocket chart for the poem "Five Wild Turkeys", fill in the blanks of the poem "Five Wild Turkeys", work in their Thanksgiving fun books, make their spelling words out of magnetic letters, or work on the ipads on the app spelling city.

Writing - Last week we officially started writer's workshop.  The students are now working on the five stages of writing - making a web, making a rough draft, editing, rewriting, and publishing.

Phonics -We are learning about words that have a base word and a suffix -s.

Math - We are learning more about using math mountains.  Our focus is on the unknown partner.  Example-  3 + __ = 7.

Religion - The theme of this week's Gospel story and promise paper is forgiveness.

Social Studies - We finished up our science Einstein kit on weather.  Now we will switch to social studies.  We are going to be learning about maps.

Computer - Since we don't have a computer teacher anymore, I have been taking the kids into the lab once a week.  (I had to wait until the laptops got set up and MAP testing was finished.)  The first three times we went into the lab, we worked on logging on, finding a program, working in the program (paint), saving their work in a file, and then finding their file again.  Last week we started to work on typing.  We learned where to put our fingers on the keyboard and what home row is.  We practiced each letter in home row.  This week we are going to continue working on typing with the letters in home row.  There's a fun game on funtotype.com called keyboard ninja.  (It's like fruit ninja...but with typing.)  After we do our home row practice this week, we're going to try that game.  :)

Have a great week!  :)

Tomorrow, November 8th, is going to be a Packer Dress Down Day.  :)
Steve Beylon, a meteorologist from WBAY, gave a great talk this morning to the first graders about weather!  At the end of his talk, we took a picture with Mr. Beylon.  He is going to show the picture on Action 2 News on Monday morning - November 11th.  The picture will be on at 4:55am, 5:25am, 5:55am, and 6:25am.

Reading - This week in work on writing we are drawing squiggles.  I made a squiggle on the paper.  The students have to make something out of the squiggle and write about it.  It is amazing to see the creations.  This week in word work the students are making words out of the letters in Thanksgiving, practicing spelling words, or working out of a Thanksgiving booklet that has word searches, word scrambles, etc. in it.  As always, while the students are working in the Daily 5, I am working with reading groups.

Phonics - This week in phonices we are continuing to work on the glued sounds all, am, and an.  We are also working with the trick words do, does, from, and have.

Math - In math we are working on subtracting using circle drawings, as well as the equations.

Handwriting - This week we are working on the letters Dd and a review of Oo and Aa.

Writing - This week we are starting our transition from journals to writer's workshop.  In writer's workshop there are 5 steps - Prewriting (making a web of ideas), Rough Draft, Editing, Rewriting, and Publishing.

Religion - This week's Gospel story in our Promise paper is about Heaven.  We also read the story of Adam and Eve in our Children's Bible.

Science - We are finishing up our Einstein weather unit.  Tomorrow, Steve Beylon from Action 2 News will be here to talk to us about weather.

Have a great week!  :)

Math - This week in math we are starting the part of unit 2 that focuses on subtraction.  We are making circle drawings, writing equations, and acting out subtraction stories.

Writing - This week we are still writing in our journals, but I am going to start introducing writer's workshop.  I will be send home an interest inventory one day this week.  The interest inventory is a list of things that your child likes.  We will glue this to the back of the writer's workshop notebook to give the students ideas of things to write about.

Reading - This week in word work our centers are:  putting together the poem "Five Little Monsters", filling in the blanks of three Halloween poems, making Halloween books, and reading and illustrating "The Twelve Days of Halloween".  Every day we have Daily 5 in reading.  This means I work with small groups.  While I am working with the groups, the students have five choices - read to self, read to someone, work on writing, listening, and word work.  We also work on Odyssey at this time.  Odyssey is a computer program that all GRACE schools have.  Each student has their own username, as their page correlates with their MAP test scores.

Phonics - This week we are starting to learn about glued sounds.  The sounds we will learn are -all, and we'll probably get to -am and -an.  The glued sounds are a little trickier to tap out, as the students "glue" their fingers together.  Ask your child to show you.  :)

Science - We continue to work on our weather Einstein kit.  This week we are learning about clouds.  The three groups we are learning about are cirrus, stratus, and cumulus.  Next Thursday, November 7th, Steve Beylon from Action 2 News will be coming in to our class to talk to us about weather.

Religion - This week's gospel story and activity is about making friends, and being a good friend.  We are also going to practice The Hail Mary.

Have a great week!  :)

Tomorrow, October 18th will be a Packer (or favorite team) dress down day.

A few notes -

*Tomorrow is the Mind Marathon.  Practice one last time tonight.  :)  We have been practicing at school and I think most of the students know most of the answers.  If you have pledge forms and money, please turn those in tomorrow.

*Tomorrow we will have fourth grade reading buddies for the first time.  We will meet with our fourth grade buddies every other Friday.

*Next week K-2 is having MAP testing.  Most of the students brought in headphones.  If you didn't please send some in.  I only have two sets of extra headphones in our classroom.  (It's been great having indivdual headphones for listening to stories on the iPads!)

*Our first mass is next Thrusday, October 24th.  Please keep practicing the reading parts at home.  I am hoping to get into the church today to practice.

Have a great night!  :)

Tomorrow, October 4th, is our field trip to the pumpkin patch.  Please dress your child in clothes you don't mind getting dirty.  :)  The weather forecast for tomorrow is scattered thunderstorms.  If the weather is bad, we will reschedule the field trip.  We won't know until tomorrow, however.  The plan right now is to pray for good weather and go the the pumpkin patch.  :)

Have a great night!

First grade happenings ~

Spelling - Today we started spelling.  A list will be coming home with your child today.  Eventually I will differentiate the lists.  The first few weeks everyone will be practicing the same words.

All of our spelling words are on Spelling City.  Spelling City is a way to practice the words by playing games.  This can be found on your computer or downloaded as a free app.  To find our lists, search by teacher name.  Type in Jodi Sullivan.  There will be two to choose from.  Choose Resurrection School.  Our lists should pop up.

Reading - We have been doing reading groups and Daily five for two full weeks now.  It has been going great.  The first week our word work was ABC order.  The second week our word work was sight word games.  This week word work will be sight word sheets and spelling practice.

Math - We finished up unit one last week.  Unit one dealt with numbers 0-10.  Today we started unit 2.  We are working on addition stories.

Science - We have been working on the Einstein weather kit.  We have learned about reading thermometers, tested water temperature, learned about cloud cover, precipitation, and wind, and tested if thermomters are hotter in white or black bags.

Phonics - We have reviewed all of the letters, keywords, and sounds.  We have reviewed tapping.  We are currently working on digraphs.  (sh, ch, th, wh, ck)

Handwriting - We have only worked on a few letters so far - Ll, Ii, and Tt.  We are working on putting the letters in the correct places and forming the letters the correct way.

Writing - We journal nearly every day.  The students write a sentence or two and illustrate.

Religion - We have been learning about the weekly Gospel through our Promise Papers.

Pumpkin Patch - Friday, October 4th
The students may have a dress down day for the field trip to the pumpkin patch.  Currently the forecast has a chance of rain...Let's hope it doesn't rain!

Have a great week!  :)

Thursday, September 26, 2013

*Tomorrow, September 27th, is a half day.  Also, if the students wear their kindness bracelet tomorrow they may have a dress down day.

*Thank you to everyone who volunteered to go to the pumpkin patch on Friday, October 4th.  Katie Meyer will be our chaperone.  If you haven't returned your permission slip yet, please do so.

*Next week we will be starting spelling.  A list will come home on Monday and we will have our first test on Friday, October 4th.

Friday, September 20, 2013

The pumpkin patch field trip has been scheduled.  Kindergarten, first grade, and second grade will be going to Berryland on Friday, October 4th in the afternoon.  Permission slips will be coming in the near future.

Have a great weekend!  :)

Wednesday, September 11, 2013

Hello!  Here are a few happenings in first grade...

Mass -
The first grade masses are on October 24th, December 19th, and April 10th.

Field Trips -
We will go to the pumpkin patch in October.  Mrs. Francois hasn't scheduled it yet.  When she does I'll get you the date.

Seussical at the Weidner Center - April 4th

The Building for Kids - We will be going there some time in the spring.

FYI

Headphones - Headphones weren't on our school list this year.  However, it would be beneficial if they had them.  We will need headphones for MAP testing.  We also use the iPads to listen to stories during Daily 5.  Headphones would be great for that, too.  Many people already brought them in.  If you still have your headphones from kindergarten, please send them.  Thank you!

Milk Rings - One of the morning activities that we do uses milk rings.  We're learning place value with them.  (ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands)  When you open a gallon of milk (or juice, Gatorade, etc.)  don't throw the ring away - send it to school.  :)  Thank you!

Snack - Reminder that we do have a snack time in the morning.  Please remember to send a snack with your child.  Thank you!

Have a great day!  :)
