Spelling FYI - We are starting Unit 6 of Fundations this week.  Unit 6 is a long unit - it is 3 weeks long.  Our spelling tests always follow what we are learning in Fundations.  Since we will be working on suffix -s for 3 weeks, we will not have another spelling list until the next unit begins.  

Writing - We are getting close to finishing up our personal narratives!   They have been working so hard on them!  In addition to the personal narratives, the students have writing choices in daily 5.  They love to write!

Math - In math we have worked on telling time to the :00, odd and even numbers, counting dimes, and  subtraction facts (subtracting 0 and subtracting a number from itself).

Religion - We are starting a new Friendzy unit.  It is called Listen Up!  We continue to learn about the weekly Gospel every week in our Promise Papers.  Last week we also had Adoration.

Science - In our PLTW unit light and sound, we learned the words transparent, translucent, and opaque.  We tested items to see if we could see light through them - and how much light we could see through them.  If the item was transparent, a lot of light went through.  If the item was translucent, some light went through.  If the item was opaque, no light went through.

Spelling - Glued Sounds -all, -am, -an

Phonics - We are starting to learn about glued sounds.  The first three glued sounds we are learning about are -all, -am, and -an.  When we tap glued sounds out, we "glue" or fingers together.

Reading - We have added reading groups to our daily five time.  The goal is to have each group "meet with teacher" every other day.  In reading groups we are reading stories, learning vocab, learning grammar concepts, learning and applying phonics concepts, working on comprehension, etc.  

Writing - We continue to practice our handwriting.  We are up to letter Jj in our practice.  We continue to work on our personal narratives.  We worked on breaking our stories into a beginning, a middle, and an end.  This week we will start our rough drafts.  

Adopt - A - Cow - This year we are again participating in the Adopt-A-Cow program.  Last year in kindergarten you may remember that the class adopted a cow named Ruby.  (First grade had Ruby last year too!)  This last week we were given our host farm information.  This coming week we will be learning our cow name.  :)  We found out that our host farm is Selz-Pralle Dairy in Humbird, Wisconsin.

Math - In math we have been working on +1 facts, +0 facts, -1 facts, using pattern blocks to cover designs in different ways, and the strategy of counting on.  

Religion - Each week we work on our Promise Paper.  The Promise Paper shares the story of Sunday's Gospel and teaches us a lesson.  This week's Gospel comes from the book of Matthew.  It is the story of the wedding feast.  We are finishing up our first Friendzy unit called "We Are One"  We continue to read from our virtues and values cards.  We are currently working on the kindness cards and the orderliness cards.  

Read-Aloud - We finished Junie B. Jones -  First Grader At Last and Junie B. Jones - Boo! And I Mean It!  We are now starting a Magic Tree House book.  We are continuing where the students left off in kindergarten. We are reading book # 6 - Afternoon on the Amazon.
