A few updates-

Reading- This week our word work focus is adjectives.  The students are creating snowman books using describing words.

First Grade Phonics- This week we learned the other three r-controlled vowels. (Bossy R). The new sounds are er, ir, and ur.  We also learned about digraph blends.

First Grade Math- Yesterday we finished up our unit on comparing.  Today we started a unit on telling time.  We made clocks out of paper plates today.  It was fun and challenging.

Science- This week we finished up our solids and liquids unit.  Our last lesson was comparing solids to liquids.  We found out they have a lot more in common than we thought.  We ended the unit by reading the book Bartholomew and the Oobleck.  Then we made oobleck!  (Cornstarch and water). It's an interesting product-it has properties of solids and liquids.

Religion- This week we learned about the Holy Spirit and the Holy Trinity.

***Reminders***

*Tomorrow is an early dismissal.

*Tomorrow is the CP Carnival.  All games are 25 cents.  All the money raised will go to the CP Center.  If your child hasn't  brought in any money yet, they may still bring it in tomorrow.

First grade has math homework tonight.

Now that I figured out why the updates were not being emailed to you, you can disregard test and the email about the new group called Res Parents. Everything should be back to normal and you will start getting updates from Jodi!

A few updates -

First Grade Math - We have been working on comparing (more than/less than) and we learned how to use comparison bars.  Mrs. Van Zeeland had to be with the third graders for MAP testing today during our math block so we couldn't break into our math groups.  Due to this, we did not test math facts today.

First Grade Phonics - We have started learning about r-controlled vowels.  (bossy r)  This week we learned the keywords for ar and or.  We are also learning about blends.

Reading - Our word work focus continues to be compound words.  During daily 5 I have been reading with the students and doing running records.  I have all of the first graders complete.  Next I'll be testing all of the second graders.

Science - We took all of our liquids and we had experiments with buoyancy and miscibility in water.  We learned that the green shampoo and the glue mixed with water.  We found out that oil and water don't mix.  Today we are going to be experimenting with two new liquids - red shampoo and corn syrup.

Religion - This week we learned about the seven Sacraments.  We focused mostly on Baptism.

Computer - This week in typing we worked with the home row.  We also added the letters e and i. Some students got onto the third lesson, which includes the letters r and u.

Writing - This week in writer's workshop we worked in our notebooks and worked on the writing process - web, rough draft, editing, rewriting, and illustrating.  We have also been writing thank you cards/letters for Christmas presents.

Handwriting - This week the first graders worked on the letters b, p, u, and s.  The second graders are working on cursive.  This week they worked on lower case l, b, and h.

***Tomorrow is a Packer Dress Down Day.

***First grade has math homework tonight.

***A few updates -

First Grade Math - We are working on comparing data.  We are learning the terms more and fewer. Don't forget to practice those math facts!

First Grade Phonics - We just finished unit 7.  We have now learned all of the glued sounds that we will use this year.  (all, am, an, ang, ing, ong, ung, ank, ink, onk, unk)

Science - We are working on the liquids portion of our solids and liquids unit.  This week we  learned about liquids that are fluid and viscous. We tested our four liquids on wax paper, in baggies, and by putting them on special containers and having drop races.  We were surprised to find out that the green shampoo was the slowest liquid.  (The most viscous)  Our class thought for sure it would have been glue.  We found out that our fastest liquid was water.  (The most fluid)

Religion - We learned about Epiphany this week.

Reading - Our word work focus this week is compound words.  As we're working in daily 5, I'm starting to pull the students for another round of running records.  Running records tell us what reading level the students are at with both accuracy and comprehension.  I am so excited by the growth I'm seeing so far!

Computer - In the computer lab this week we started working on typing skills.  So far we worked on the home row.  The kids did awesome on this!

Writing - This week in writer's workshop we wrote to the Packers!  There was an article in the the Press Gazette saying that they wanted people to write letters to the Packers.  I downloaded the form and we wrote letters and drew pictures and sent them off to Lambeau Field!

ART
This week in art we are working on some basic painting skills while learning about an artist named Wassily Kandinsky. Some skills we are working on include how to hold the brush, take care of a paint brush, load the brush with paint, control the amount of water we use, and how to keep our colors and water clean. We are also practicing using color in various parts of the painting for unity and balance, or "painting around " the whole piece. We are also talking about different art styles. Some artists paint realistic work, some art is more about imagination and fantasy, some is about feelings and emotions, and some paintings are about lines, shapes, colors, like Concentric Circles by Kandinsky. And of course we continue to work on our mosaic bird baths which are turning out amazing! Have a great week and Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

Tomorrow we will have a new student joining our class.  His name is Corben Jensen.  He is in first grade.  Corben and his family are moving from California.  His family will be moving to the Milwaukee suburb area, but they are staying with family in Green Bay for a short time.  He will be with our class for approximately 6-8 weeks.  He also has a brother that will be joining our kindergarten class.

And..the Miller's have made their way to San Diego.  Tomorrow Anna, Mia, and Aaron will start their adventure at their new school.  We wish them well, but we can't wait for them to return to Green Bay!  :)

Enjoy your last night of vacation!
Blessings!
