Spelling - We will not have a spelling list this week.

Reading - All running records are complete.  Students will be starting new reading groups this week.  It is amazing how the students have grown in their reading already from September to November!  Daily 5 is one of our favorite times of day!  The students love working in the centers!

Read-Aloud - We are reading Jigsaw Jones - The Case of the Perfect Prank.

Phonics - We are learning about 4 new glued sounds.  They are ank (bank), ink (pink), onk (honk) and unk (junk).  Next week when we have a spelling list, these are the words that will be on our list.

Writing - We are still working on our personal narratives.  This past week we wrote up our middle and our end.  This coming week we are going to work on adding details to all three parts of our stories.

We also continue to work in our November Journals.

Math - In math we worked on covering designs multiple ways with pattern blocks, adding 2 facts, and measuring with non-standard units.  (We used cubes.  )  We also had some fun with some turkey math.

Religion - We continued working on our Virtues and Values Kindness cards.  We read out of  Christ Our Life with Brother Jacob.  We talked about our families and the Holy Family.  We are starting to talk about the season of Advent.

Thursday afternoon we spent some time outside.  It was a beautiful day!  Some students helped plant bulbs in our outdoor classroom area.  We will see how they look in the spring!

*We have two new students starting in our class today!  Please welcome Jack and Duke to Holy Cross!

*Emily's birthday is Thursday - Thanksgiving Day!  Since we won't be at school on Thursday, Emily would like to celebrate on Tuesday.  Emily's special treat - she has declared that Tuesday is Pajama Day!  :)

Have a great week and a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Spelling - Due to our short week, we will not have a spelling list this week.

Reading - During Daily 5, I have been working on running records with the students.  I hope to be finished with all of the students this week.  While I am reading individually with students, the class is very busy working on their centers.  The centers are read to self, read to someone, listening, work on writing, and word work.  We have a lot of students that love work on writing and word work!

Read-Aloud - This week we will be finishing up Junie B. Jones First Grader - Turkeys We Have Loved and Eaten and Other Thankful Stuff

Phonics - We finished up our unit on suffix s.  We are now learning about 4 new glued sounds - ang, ing, ong, and ung.  We have 4 new trick words - why, by, my, and try.

Writing - We continue to work on our personal narratives.  We gave our small moment a beginning, a middle, and an end.  We did some illustrating to help us think about our small moment.  We took some time to write up and add details to our beginning.

We also continue to work in our November Journal.  This journal has our four choices stories.

Math - In math we worked a lot on odd and even numbers.  We learned that even numbers always end with 2, 4, 6, 8, or 0 and the odd numbers always end with 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9.  We worked on +2 facts.  We learned that if you start with and even number and you add 2, your total will be even.  If you start with an odd number and you add 2, your total will be odd.  We also spent some time working on clocks.  We are working on the :00 and the :30.  We also spent some time working on a fun addition sheet that had us make a bar graph.

Religion - We finished up our gratitude virtues and values cards.  We ended our gratitude cards by making thankful turkeys.  We started our new virtues and values word - kindness.  Friday was World Kindess Day and we read a story by an NDA graduate about kindness called Mary's Heart.  Brother Jacob visited our classroom this week.  He brought in the the monstrance to share with us.  He talked to us about all of the symbols on the monstrance.  He shared with us what we would be doing at Adoration.  He explained to us that we would have some special time to talk to Jesus.  Friday we celebrated Mass - and we had Adoration.

Science / Social Studies - We concluded our puddle experiment.  It took our puddle 7 days to evaporate!  We watched a fun video of The Magic School Bus where the kids turned into the water cycle.  On Wednesday we read a Scholastic News and had a discussion about Veterans Day.  Friday, we had our virtual visit with meteorologist Steve Beylon!  The students were very polite and very engaged!  The students will be on the news Monday morning.  (By the time you read this - that will have already happened.  But - check out Steve Beylon on Facebook - he always posts pictures of the classes he visits on his Facebook page as well.)  After our visit, the students wrote beautiful thank yous for Mr. Beylon.  I made them into a google slide show.  I will share the slide show with you.

Tommy's Birthday - We celebrated Tommy's birthday!  Thank you Tommy for the dress down day!

Have a great week!
