***PBIS/DWP - This year we are continuing the tradition of handing out faith shields/magic stars.  The stars/shields are handed out to the students when they are caught doing something good!  :)  The students have 2 choices with their stars/shields.  They may put them in the whole school bucket at mass.  In this bucket they have a chance for their name to be picked.  Their name gets called and they can pick from prizes like sitting in the principal's chair, NUT card, eating lunch with a teacher, etc.  The other choice they have is to put their stars/shields in the class bucket.  The class decides on a reward to earn.  Our class decided on a device day.  Their goal was 400 shields/stars.  Well, they have earned 400!  That is 400 kind deeds, 400 kind words, 400 acts of kindness!  So...the students are allowed to bring an electronic device to school tomorrow.  If they do not have a device or if you do not want them to bring one, that is ok.  We have 10 ipads and 2 computers in our classroom they may use.  Their devices will stay in their backpacks until the end of the day when we have our device day time.

***Canned Goods - We are having a food drive.  The students may bring canned foods to school.  Each classroom has a box outside of their classroom.  All of the cans will be brought up at mass on Wednesday.  The food will then be donated.

***Wednesday, November 23rd - All students are to be dropped off and picked up at the Res campus.  We will celebrate the all school mass at Res.  The rest of the day we will be doing buddy activities.  The students should be dropped off at Res by 7:45.  We are bringing them into the building at 7:50.  Mass begins at 8:05.  All students will then be picked up at the Res campus at 11:15.

***Monday, November 28th - Monday, November 28th is a Packer Dress Down Day.

***A few FYI's -

First Grade Math - We have been working on doubles up to 20, doubles plus one, and doubles plus two.  We have also been learning about adding ones and tens, how to write the number words, and how to use the number trail on our math boards.

Phonics - We finished up our unit on suffix s.  This week we will start learning about some new glued sounds - ang, ing, ung, and ong.

Writing - We are continuing to write in our journals.  This week and last week we have also been making thankful turkeys - writing down things that we are thankful for.  Today I am sending home an interest inventory.  It's a sheet that the students need to fill out with your help.  It has things like their favorite movie, sport, book, etc. We weligionill glue the interest inventory to the back of the writer's workshop notebook.  It will give them ideas of things to write about in writer's workshop if they should get writer's block.  :)

Religion - In Religion we have been talking abut God the Father, God caring for us, very important people in our lives, and ways to pray.

Science - We started a new unit called light and sound.  So far we have been discussing light.  We made pinhole boxes.  We observed what we saw in the box using a flashlight.

A few FYI's -

First Grade Math - We have started learning about place value.  We are working on the ones place and the tens place.  We are learning about teen numbers.  We are learning how to "make a ten" to solve a problem.  We have also started learning the basics of telling time.

First Grade Phonics - We are continuing to learn about basewords and suffix s.  This week we learned the difference between a suffix s word that is plural and a suffix s word that is an action word.

Science - This week we finished up our Einstein Kit on weather.  We learned about three types of clouds this week - cumulus, stratus, and cirrus.  Next week we will be starting our new Einstein Kit - light and sound.

Read-aloud - We finally finished reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.  Now we are reading a Junie B. Jones book titled Turkeys We Have Loved And Eaten (And Other Thankful Stuff)

Writing - We continue to write in journals and work on writing in daily 5.  This week we also made (and continue to make into next week) 2 types of thankful turkeys.  One had 6 feathers that we had to write things we were thankful on.  The other is a hand print that they are making into turkeys and writing something on it that they are thankful for.  We also wrote thank you letters to Mr. Beylon this week.

Handwriting - We are continuing out of our book.  Our focus is writing the letters in the correct place and forming them the correct way.

Religion - We have been working on creation books.  We are illustrating the seven days of creation.  Today we worked in our Promise Paper and learned that the Gospel this weekend is about worrying.  Today we also had a visit from Fr. Bob.  He talked about veterans and the military with the students.

Reading - Every day we work on daily 5.  There are 4 different reading groups.  While the students are in group, they are working on a story at their reading level.  When they are not in group they are either doing read to self, read to someone, listening, work on writing, or word work.  From now until Thanksgiving our word work centers will revolve around Thanksgiving.  Some examples are making words out of the letters in Thanksgiving, making Thanksgiving books. filling in the blanks of Thanksgiving poems, and writing and creating thankful turkeys.  Raz Kids - FYI - we now have a subscription for Raz Kids again.  This weekend I will (hopefully) create our page and get all of the students entered.

Spelling - This week we didn't have a spelling list.  We'll have a list again next week.  (If we ever have a short week, we won't have a spelling list.)  Just a reminder that our class has a Spelling City page your student can use to practice the spelling words at home.

ART
In art class, we are learning about how artists use shapes to create art. We used basic geometric shapes to build a cityscape silhouette. This cut silhouette looks great against our watercolor wash skies.  Currently, we are learning about negative shapes. By crayon rubbing over the edges of fish templates, we are creating a school of negative shape fish. The fish remain the white of the paper, while the crayon color becomes the background. Look for negative shapes in your environment, such as the empty space between the rungs on a bench or fence, or the oval in the empty space of your coffee cup handle. Have a great weekend.          Mrs. Jeanne Ihlenfeldt
