Spelling - We are done with spelling lists for the year!!!

Reading - Our word work centers focus on tongue twisters, subject/predicate, and making sentences.  All of the students have finished running records and sight word checks for the year!  The growth has been absolutely amazing!  This week we will work in guided reading groups while working on daily five centers.  Here are some pictures of daily five.

 Tongue Twisters

Subjecct/Predicate and making silly sentences

Practicing spelling

Writing letters

Sharing stories

Phonics - We are continuing with the -es suffix and adding y to i, then add -es suffix.

Writing - We keep writing!  Our writer's workshop stories have improved so much!  It is amazing to think about how they were writing (or barely writing) when they first started first grade and compare it to how they are writing now!

Science - In our organism unit we talked about ways animal move.  We then made a graph of different animals that walk, swim, glide, and fly.  We read a Scholastic News about sharks.  We learned about animal habitats.  We continue to care for our aquariums and terrariums.

Math - In math we learned about 3D geometric shapes - cones, cubes, spheres, pyramids, and rectangular prisms.  We worked on adding three digit numbers.  We learned tricks to adding three number together like finding a ten or finding a double.  We worked on adding coins and dollar bills.  We also worked on diving a set of objects equally by sharing.

Religion - We have been working out of our Religion books.  Our latest lessons/pages have been about the Holy Spirit.  We also continue to work on the virtue card self-control.

Read-Aloud - We finished reading Charlotte's Web and we are watching the movie.

Hard to believe it's May - This was recess on Friday morning.  :)

Have a great week!

Math - We worked on identifying and adding dollar bills together (1's, 5's, 10's, and 20's).  We learned who was on each bill and what was on the back of the bill as well.  We worked on the 9's addition facts.  We related the 9 facts to the 10 facts, which are easier.  Example - If we know that 10+8=18, then 9+8=17 - you just take one away.  We also worked on fractions this week - halves, thirds, fourths, fifths, and sixths.

This year our class has been collecting money.  I never asked them to - kids just randomly brought in money!  During art they made a "giving machine" with recycled goods.  We discussed all sorts of things we could give our money to throughout the year.  This week the class decided what they wanted to give their money to.  They wanted to give their money to Quinn's Walk!  Well, we had a great math lesson with it as well!  We had to add up all the bills and all the coins.  Our grand total was $28.68!

Phonics - We learned about another suffix - es.  We learned that to make a word plural you usually add -s.  However, if a word ends in s, ss, sh, ch, or x you add -es to make the word plural.

Science - We are continuing along with our organisms unit.  This week we compared and contrasted the terrarium plants to the aquarium plants, as well as compared and contrasted the terrarium animals to the aquarium animals. We added the animals to our aquarium / terrarium pictures in our books.  We then made aquarium and terrarium murals.  We learned about four amazing plants - rafflesia, giant water lily, saguaro cactus, and venus flytrap.  We also read a Scholastic News about ladybugs.

Reading - During Daily 5 I am working on the last running records of the year!  The growth these first graders have shown is absolutely amazing!  This week our word work / writing centers will focus on tongue twisters and subject/predicate (action parts and naming parts of sentences).

Religion - In Religion we have been working in our book on a unit about Mary - As May is the month of Mary!  We also continue to work on our virtue card - self-control.

Read-Aloud - We are currently reading the book Charlotte's Web.  The students are loving this classic!

Here are a few more pictures from the week.  We had two big things - The spring concert and Quinn's Walk!  Two great events!  :)

Spring Concert nice pose

And of course the silly pose!

Friday was the perfect day for Quinn's Walk!  It wasn't too hot and it wasn't too cold!
The class did a great job walking to the Mother House and back!  It was a great day
to support Quinn and JDRF!

Our class is missing our friend Macy.  We got an email and a picture from her this week.
They wanted to send a picture back to her. This is what we sent.

This week is the last full week of the school year!!!  Make it a great week!  :)

Reading - Our word work focus has been pronouns.  The students continue to work hard in reading groups as well as all of the daily 5 centers.  Starting this week I will begin the last round of running records for the year.  This past week during daily 5 the students were also working on writing with cards and stories about their moms for Mother's Day.  The students also had the chance to practice working on typing.

Writing - We continue to work on writer's workshop.  The students have improved their writing skills so much this year!  In writing we have been working on the rough draft, editing (spelling, punctuation, word choice), rewriting, and publishing!  It is amazing to see all the steps and to see the final product!  A few students have been working extremely hard on typing.  Miles asked if he could type his own story since he had worked so hard on typing!  Here he is showing off his skills!  He worked so hard on this!

Phonics - In phonics we have been working on 2 syllable words with suffixes -s, -ed, and -ing.  We also learned about -ic.  If a word is 2 syllables and it ends with the -ic sound, it is spelled ic.  If it is a one syllable word it is spelled -ick.  This week we will be learning about when to use the suffix -es.

Math - In math we worked on shapes that are congruent, partners and switch partners of 10, subtraction facts of 10, fractions 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, and the term dozen.

Science - We continue to work in our organisms Einstein kit.  This past week we learned about pill bugs and beetles.  The pill bugs have an exoskeleton, a segmented body, 12-14 legs, and they curl up for protection.  The bess beetle has 6 legs, three body parts, antenna, an exoskeleton, and they squeak to communicate.  Beetles are in the insect category, but pill bugs are not.  Both organisms are now living in our terrariums.  Our snails are thriving.  Our guppies are not doing so well.  :(

Religion - Our current virtue card is self-control.  It goes through the steps 1.  Stop what you are doing.  2.  Think about your choices.  3.  Make a choice.
This past Friday we went over our last Promise Paper of the year!  We also had Adoration this Friday and the Living Rosary last Friday.  We also spent some time working out of our safe environment packet.

Macy - Our friend Macy's last day with us was last week Wednesday.  We had a Macy celebration on Wednesday!  Macy starts at her new school in Wausau on Monday.  The class misses her already!  We wish her the best of luck in her new city!  <3

Happy Mother's Day!  The students worked so hard this week on cards and stories for their moms!  I hope you love them!  Some of their answers were quite hilarious!!!  We also had a great time painting flower pots and planting flowers for our moms!  We had special helpers Mrs. Curran and Mrs. Gordon help us plant.

As we were getting ready to go home with our flower pots I snapped some pictures with the students and their plants.

Thank you so much for the notes, cards, letters, gifts, etc. for Teacher Appreciation Week!  They are so appreciated!  I am so lucky to be a part of Holy Cross!  Thank you!

Have a great week!  :)
