*I've been thinking long and hard about a behavior plan to use with this class.  This class is full of great kids with great ideas!  However, many of them blurt out instead of raising their hands.  Once in a while - no big deal, but when it's on a consistent basis - and reminders don't work - that's a problem.  I've done a lot of searching, and I found something I'm going to try.  I made a file on the Smart Board, so it's very visual.  It works on a point system.  If a student blurts out, interrupts, etc. their name gets moved over.  Each student has four symbols under their name.  At the end of the day, I'll count how many points the student has (from 1-4).  On Friday, we'll tally up the total for the week.  The most points a student can earn is 20.  If the student has at least 15 points for the week, they earn a little reward.  We brainstormed some ideas today. The kids came up with things like iPad time, bubble gum, doing announcements, staying inside for recess, little treats, etc. Also - if a students gets down to 0 on any given day, a note will be sent home.  The parent needs to sign the note and the student needs to bring the note back.  If the note is brought back signed the next day, the student will earn 1 point back.  I'm excited to try this and see how things go!

Have a great night!  :)

*Thank you so much to the Abnet, Handrick, and Meyer families!  They bought our classroom some much needed wipes and/or dry erase markers.  The students are especially thankful for the markers that work so well on our math boards!

Have a wonderful spring break!

I decided not to have a spelling list this week.  Friday morning is the talent show and today is St. Patrick's Day.  We spent the morning learning facts about St. Patrick and Ireland, as well as making some really cool St. Patrick's Day crafts!

Have a great night!  Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Wish List
I don't really like to put out a wish list, but we're in need of a few things.  If anyone could help out, that would be wonderful.

* Cleaning wipes  (we're on our last container)
*  Dry erase markers - We use them almost daily with our math boards.  We don't have many good ones      left.

Thank you so much!!!

A request -
If you send money to school with your child, please send it in an envelope or baggie with their name on it. Please also write how much money is in the envelope or baggie.  Three students walked into school today saying they brought money for the bookfair, but they had lost it.  Mrs. Van Zeeland even took them outside to look for their money and it wasn't found.  Thank you!

Lots of things have been happening in first grade.  Here are a few updates -

Now that Lent has begun we will be having Stations of the Cross.  Stations will be on the following dates:
Friday, March 14th @ 2:15
Tuesday, March 18th @ 10:15
Monday, March 31st @ 9:00
Friday, April 11th @ 2:15
Wednesday, April 16th @ 2:15 - Living Stations

We have Station 8 - Each week 2 students will be reading that Station.  No readings have been assigned yet.

April 10th is going to be the next (and last) mass the first graders will be leading.

*In science we are just about finished with our organisms Einstein kit.  It was such a fun kit!  The students loved growing the plants and maintaining the aquariums and terrariums.

*In math we are working on adding and subtracting teen numbers - using many different methods.

*In phonics we recently learned what a closed syllable word is and how to mark it.  We are now learning about vowel teams.

*In writing we have been taking our writer's workshop stories and making them into digital 3D pop-up books on the website www.zooburst.com.  They are turning out awesome!

*This week we have been focusing on Dr. Seuss.  (He would be 110 this week!)  We have been reading lots of books, working on many activities and projects, visiting the website Seussville. com, and learning lots of facts about him.

*Headphones - Most students have headphones.  If your child doesn't...please send some.  We use them every day with the iPads for listening to stories.  We use them every time we go to the computer lab.  We use them for MAP testing.  Thank you!

Have a great night!
