We will not have a spelling list this week or next week.  :)

PBIS -
The first and second graders have been working really hard and they have met our class goal - 500 Faith Shields!  That is awesome!  Those Faith Shields represent acts of kindness, helping others, doing the right thing, etc. etc.!  I am so proud of them!!!  The incentive that they chose is a pajama and electronics/free time day!  So, the students may dress in their pajamas this week Wednesday, March 2nd.  They may also bring in an electronic device if they choose to.  They do not need to. We have plenty of  iPads at school if they want to have a device.  They could also bring a board game or another activity of their choice.  We will set aside 30-40 minutes on Wednesday to have free time.

***First grade has math homework tonight.

***Tomorrow is a Hawaiian dress down day.

A few FYIs -

First Grade Math - We learned about basic fractions.  We learned 2D shapes and 3D shapes.  We are measuring using non-standard units.  (paper clips, paper)

2nd Grade Math - Second grade has officially finished the second grade book and started the third grade book.  We are starting multiplication with fives.  Many of the students have mastered multiplication up to 12 already!

First Grade Phonics - We have learned the vowel teams oi, oy, oa, oe, and and ow.  We have learned about closed syllables (and the difference between open and closed syllables).  We learned how to tap when there are five sounds in a word.

Social Studies - We learned land and water terms.  (hill, lake, mountain, ocean, plain, river)  We learned about resources.  We got to the part in our book about the United States.  We're taking it a little bit farther.  We are now learning the names of each of the fifty states, their capitals, and a few facts about each state.  We're doing this little by little.  Each time we have social studies we learn three states.

Reading - This week in word work we are focusing on contraction words.

Religion - This week we learned about the transfiguration of Jesus.  Ms. McAllister gave us a nice talk.  We also learned about it in our Promise Paper.  We are working on looking up readings in the Bible.  Each day we add to our Lenten Path.

First Grade Phonics - We are learning about vowel teams.  We have learned about ai, ay, ee, ea, and ey.  We are also learning about closed syllables.

Reading - The kids are doing FANTASTIC work in daily 5!  Our word work center this week combines reading, writing, and social studies.  The students are making mobiles about Abraham Lincoln and George Washington.

Handwriting - We continue to work on writing neatly, forming letters correctly, and putting letters in the correct spaces.

Valentines - The students loved passing out their Valentines today!  It was fun to watch them!  I snapped a quick picture as they were moving around passing them out.

Art - The All Grace Schools Art Show is scheduled for tonight in the Notre Dame Academy High School Commons. There is also an All Grace School Band Concert that same night in their auditorium. A few art pieces will be selected from each grade for each Grace School to showcase a variety of artwork.

Can I just say how amazing these mosaic birdbaths are turning out! I can't wait for all of you to see them. The students are doing a great job! And they really seem to enjoy working on them and seeing their sketches transformed into tile.        Mrs. Ihlenfeldt

Reminder - Tomorrow all of the students are being dropped off and picked up at St. Matts.

Snack - Don't worry about bringing a snack.  I packed a bag of pretzels for all of the students to have for a snack tomorrow.

Our schedule tomorrow looks something like this - mass, recess, snack, make Valentines for a nursing home, listen to a presentation, lunch and recess, finish Valentines, play minute to win it games.

I actually will not be there tomorrow.  Zak has pneumonia.  I'm going to stay with him tomorrow.  Mrs. Trester will be with my students.  The students know that this is happening.

Have a great night!

A few pictures from today -

We had an amazing, awesome, crazy day today!  Our whole day revolved around the number 100.

We wrote 100 words,
were quiet for 100 seconds,
rolled dice to get to the number 100 (It took 27 rolls),
talked about what we would spend $100 on (They think it will go a lot farther than it will),
did 100 exercises,
built with 100 of all sorts of objects - legos, duplos, 100 piece puzzles, cups, blocks, dominoes, beads, etc.,
ran in place for 100 seconds,
measured ourselves on the 100 " man,
created pictures out of die cut 100's,
read 100th day books,
made 100th day crowns,
wore 100th day glasses,
and so many more activities.  We got to about half of the activities I had planned.  Have I mentioned that I love the 100th day of school?  :)

I'll post some pics later tonight.

***This week we will not have a spelling list.***

***And...TOMORROW IS A SNOW DAY!  Enjoy your day off!
