A few FYI's -

First Grade Math - This week we have been working a lot on the ones places and the tens place.  We worked on circling shapes in groups of ten.  We made hundreds charts and looked for the patterns.  We used the hundreds chart for find all the numbers that had 5 in the ones place, 7 in the tens place, etc.  We also used the hundreds chart to help us add or subtract numbers by 10, 20, 30, etc.  Today we worked on math facts by playing shut the box.

Phonics - We are continuing to learn about blends and r-contolled vowels.  (ar, er)

Reading - This week we made a book called Is It Christmas Yet?  We have been working on chorale readings of the book.  Another fun book/song is The Twelve Days of Christmas.  We read the book and then made our own version of what we would like for the twelve days.

Science - We are at the end of our light and sound unit.  We made a drum out of a cup and a rubber skin.  We put rubber bands around a shoe box.  The rubber bands were different thicknesses and sizes.  We listened to the different sounds made by each rubber band.  Then we tightened the rubber bands with a ruler and listened for the change in the sound.
We tied s string around a spoon.  Then we put the string around Caxton's fingers and we hit the spoon with a pencil.  He could feel the vibrations.  As he made the string tighter, we noticed the change in the pitch.  And...our favorite experiment with vibrations and sound - we made telephones out of paper cups, string, and paper clips.

Religion - All week we have been talking about the fourth week of Advent.  We lit the last purple candle - he candle of love.  We have been discussing five more - what can we do five more of to show love?  Tomorrow we are reading a beautiful story out of our Children's Bible called The Story of Baby Jesus.

Writing - We are getting the hang of writer's workshop,  Some students have started to have their stories typed and they are illustrating illustrating their stories.  All of the steps we are working on are - making a web of ideas, writing a rough draft, editing, rewriting, and publishing.

Handwriting - We continue to work on forming the letters the correct way and making sure they are in the correct spaces.

Something we are working on all the time in our classroom is following the expectations.  We are lucky to have Mrs. MaryBeth Friday work with us.  She has been visiting our classroom on Wednesday mornings.  She has been reading stories and doing lessons on the zones of regulation, following the group plan vs. following your own plan, whole body listening (eyes on the person talking, mouth is quiet, ears are listening, hands and feet are down and still), raising your hand vs. blurting out, and limiting interruptions.  We use a lot of positives in our classroom to reinforce these concepts.  They love to earn Faith Shields and Magic Stars. They can put these in the bucket at church for a chance to win a drawing or put them in our class bucket to earn a classroom reward.   The students also earn positives in our class dojo by following these expectations.  When they have 70% or higher by Friday, they earn Friday Fun Time!  What does that mean?  The last 20-25 minutes of the day on Friday are free!  They can play on the computers, play on the ipads, draw, play games...whatever they want!  If they don't earn Friday Fun Time, they have to sit with me, talk about what happened, and make a plan for the next week.  The students love Friday Fun Time and are working hard to earn it.  :)

Social Studies - We will not have another Einstein Kit until March.  So after Christmas we will switch from Science to Social Studies.  We do have a book that we will be working out of.  They will be learning things like communities, simple land forms, and even states.

Dress Down Day - Tomorrow is a Packer dress down day.

The students can also choose to wear Christmas clothes tomorrow.

Thank you so much to Mrs. Klika for organizing our Christmas party tomorrow!

Gym -
DECEMBER/JANUARY (all posted on school web page) PE K-2
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! I hope the time spent with your child over the Christmas break is happy, healthy, and safe. The children are all showing improvement in their cardio/running laps. During December we spent a couple of extra classes doing our cardio downstairs in the old church hall due to concert set up. And, WOW, great concert!!!!! I love going to those things. The music was excellent. We will continue to work on their gross motor skills. I will be doing a recheck of the skipping and galloping as well as the other strength builders of seal walk, crab walk, bear walk/run, etc. I will be working on more station for the ½ combined class for after break as well.

A few FYI's -

First Grade Math - We have been using different methods to solve problems - such the make a ten strategy, counting on, or subtraction to solve an addition problem, solving story problems by figuring out what is missing, and matching equations to dot pictures.

Phonics - We are learning about blends and how they are different from digraphs.  A digraph is two consonants together that make a new sound. (th, sh, ch, wh, ck)  A blend is two consonants together, but you can still hear their original sound.  (br, fl, sk)

Science - This week we learned about  reflection.  We learned that reflection can be with a ball bouncing, as well as a mirror or glass.  We used mirrors and flashlights to reflect light on a target.  Here are a few pictures from that lesson -'

Today we are going to learn about vibrations and sound.

Religion - This week is the third week of Advent.  Our five more this week is five more ways we can give joy.  All of our Religion classes this week were spent practicing for today's mass.  Tomorrow we will work on our weekly Promise Paper.

Reading - This week word work and work on writing are all about Christmas!  Christmas sight words, Christmas word finds, Christmas sticker stories, writing Christmas cards, etc.  Each group continues to meet with me to read stories at their reading level.

Tonight is the middle school Christmas concert.  It's at 6:00 in the St. Matthew Campus gym.

ART
In art class we watched the video, The Legend of the Poinsettia. I love this Mexican Christmas story about a family chosen by church, to weave a blanket for baby Jesus in the Christmas manger scene. What an honor is was to be chosen. Mama falls ill, so the little girl tries to finish the blanket but it gets into a tangled mess. She does not feel she can go into church now  because she does not have a gift for the Christ child. An older woman tells her Jesus will love any gift she brings because it is from her.....so she picks some grasses from the side of the road and offers them to baby Jesus. On Christmas morning, these grasses bloom into beautiful red poinsettias. We are using this story as inspiration for our late November and December art. We learned about patterns and how to weave, and each wove a paper blanket for baby Jesus. Now we are printing and painting beautiful poinsettia flowers for Christmas morning. Merry Christmas everyone. Mrs. Jeanne Ihlenfeldt

A few FYI's -

First Grade Math - We are working on place value - the ones place and the tens place.  We have been adding numbers on the number path up to 100!  Today we worked on adding just ones, just tens, and then combining the ones and the tens.  (Ex. 2+3=5, 20+30=50, 20+3=23)

Phonics - This week we learned four new glued sounds.  They are ank, ink, onk, and unk.  (bank, pink, honk, and junk)  We have been doing dictation, working in our student notebooks, and using the letter cards to make words with our glued sounds.

Religion - We have been learning about the season of Advent.  We started off Monday with a prayer service to light the first candle - hope.  We will meet each Monday morning during Advent to light candles.  We are also doing something called Five More.  Each week, what can we do five more of?  This first week is hope.  Each child wrote what they can do five more of to give hope.  Their papers will all be hung up in the atrium of the school.  We have also been working on making our own Advent wreaths.  Each week we will add another flame.

Writing - This week we started something new - writer's workshop!  We are learning the five steps.  They are
1.  Prewriting - making a story web of ideas
2.  Rough Draft
3.  Editing
4.  Rewriting with corrections
5.  Publishing - In this step we will have a book typed and bound.  We get to be the illustrators.

Handwriting - We continue to work out of our handwriting books.  We are always working on forming the letters correctly and putting the letters in the correct spaces.

Reading - This week our daily five word work consists of contractions.  We have six different centers that the students can work on - such as file folder games, matching the two words to the contraction word, and using Easter eggs to put the two words together.  Each reading group continues to meet and read stories at their level.

Science - Tomorrow we are going to learn how light interacts with different materials.  We are going to learn three words - transparent, translucent, and opaque.

Elves have taken over our classroom!  Today the students created these amazing elves, using their own faces.  They are absolutely adorable!

Tomorrow is a Packer Dress Down Day!

DECEMBER
PE
K-2
We are starting the second trimester.  As much as I am ready for winter and life should be slowing down to ready ourselves for the birth of Jesus, it seems to be going faster and faster.  Please slow down and take the time with family to ready everyone for the coming of Jesus!!
In the ½ combined class, we are working on those big gross motor skills of throwing a football, doing hoola hooping (stop smiling; it isn’t as easy as it looks), hockey stick use, trainer volleyballs, etc.  We finished up some fine motor with marbles, small foam balls, horse shoes (foam), and jump roping.  On Mondays the Kindergarten works on each specific skill that the large group works on in their class.
Fridays is going to be classified as a “cardio” day.  We will be running and I will record the laps for you to look at.  Those will be posted in Power School.  I will also post the amount of laps that are included in a mile soon.  We have practiced two times but want them to ready themselves before I start.  When they work well, as a class, they can earn a Friday for scooters.  They love scooters and they work heavily on strength of legs (hip flexors, quad and hamstring strength) and arms (biceps, triceps), as well as shoulders.  Coordination is another great benefit.  It is amazing what games they come up with on their own to play while on those scooters.  The last day earned for second grade they created a tag game and were working out pretty hard so it did turn into a “cardio” day anyway.
