Science - We made a water cycle craft

Dancing Turkeys - We made these turkeys after learning about the parts of turkeys and turkey behaviors in a Mystery Science lesson.  :)

A math facts game on the Smart Board

Turkey Stories - Our fourth grade buddies helped us write our stories.

Groundbreaking of our outdoor classroom -
We are going to have a groundbreaking ceremony on Friday, December 13th, after mass.  Each classroom is looking for a volunteer to provide dirt dessert for their class after the groundbreaking.  Please let me know if you would be willing to make and provide dirt dessert for the first grade class.  Thank you!

Spelling - We will not have a spelling list this week - or next week.  Our next list will be the first week of December.

Reading - We are working on another round of running records and checking sight words - all while working in the daily five centers.

Math - We have been working on our subtracting one facts.  We have also been working on adding three numbers together.  Some tricks for adding three numbers together are looking for a ten, looking for a double, or looking for a double plus one.  Today we worked on fact families.  A fact family is three numbers that make an equation.  Each fact family has 4 equations - 2 adding and 2 subtracting.  For example, the equations for the fact family of 5, 3, and 8 are -
1.  5+3=8
2.  3+5=8
3.  8-5=3
4.  8-3=5

Phonics - We are learning about four new glued sounds - ang, ing, ong, and ung.  Our letter/keyword/sounds are ang-fang, ing-ring, ong-song, and ung-lung.  We have been using our magnetic tiles, our cards, and the smartboard to make words with our new glued sounds.

Writing - We have been practicing our handwriting.  We are currently working on punctuation - ! and ?.  We made thankful turkeys.  We had to write things we were thankful for on our turkeys.

Science - We learned what a forecast is.  We watched the forecast of meteorologist Steve Beylon.  Then we compared it to the days actual weather.  He was accurate the day we watched.  Mr. Beylon will be coming to our classroom in December to talk with our class about weather.  :)  This week we will also be making a water cycle project.  A fun science activity we did this week came from our Mystery Science website.  We learned facts about turkeys - then we created our own turkeys - and had them do their turkey dance!

Religion - Friday we worked on our promise paper.  The theme of the Gospel for Sunday was that Jesus protects and helps you.  In our Religion book we have been learning about Baptism and the seven sacraments.  Brother Jacob comes to our classroom every Wednesday.  When we told him we were learning about Baptism he asked us questions about our own Baptisms - and that's when we got our Brother Jacob homework.  :)

Birthdays - We got to celebrate two birthdays this last week.  Rachel's birthday was on Monday.  On Friday we celebrated one of our volunteers, Ms. Mac!

Pete the Cat at the Weidner Center - We got to see a great performance of Pete the Cat at the Weidner Center last week!  The show was incredible!

Speaking of Pete the Cat - Here are all the first graders with their noses in a Pete the Cat book in the kindergarten room!

***Snow clothes - We will be sending snow clothes home every Friday - and more often if needed.:)  Please wash snow clothes when they are home.  They get really wet - and they get really stinky!  We have some boots that are pretty stinky as well.  If you could wash and dry them at home it would be very helpful!

Please send extra clothes to keep at school - especially a few pairs of socks.  We have a lot of students getting soaked at recess and they would love dry clothes to change into.

Reading - We work in our reading groups while the class is working in daily 5 centers.  We switched to our Thanksgiving themed centers for word work.  The students are loving the making words center - they make words out of the letters in Thanksgiving.  Another favorite is the poem center.  The students read the poem and read the words on note cards.  They put the words on the note cards in the correct order.  Soon we'll be starting sight word checks and another round of running records for the end of the trimester.

Religion - We have been working out of our book.  We learned about Moses.  We learned three stories about Moses - the burning bush, the parting of the sea, and the ten commandments.  Our Promise Paper and Gospel story was about heaven this last week.  On Friday we went to Adoration.

Science - We did an experiment with puddles.  We put water in a bowl.  We kept track of it every day to see how long it took to evaporate.  It took four days for our puddle to evaporate.  We learned about clouds.  We learned about three types - cumulus, stratus, and cirrus.

Math - We worked on adding 0 and we continued to work on the counting on strategy.  We also worked on some Thanksgiving fun math.  :)

Phonics - We are continuing to work on the suffix s.  This week we are learning about the difference between a suffix s plural word and a suffix s action word.  (verb)

Here are some fun creations from the week

We made hands and feet turkeys!  We traced our feet to make the body and we traced our hands to make the feathers.

Mrs. Pederson, Vincent's mom, came into our classroom yesterday to share with us some social thinking.  We have been learning about the zones of regulation, the expected and unexpected behaviors, and other strategies.  Mrs. Pederson introduced us to the thinkables and unthinkables and some superflex thinking.  :)  The characters we learned about yesterday were Rock Brain and Rex Flexinator.

Rock Brain gets us stuck on our own plan.  Rex Flexinator helps us think of ways to defeat Rock Brain!  We did this lesson yesterday with our kindergarten friends.  Today we met with kindergarten again and went over all sorts of strategies.  We had a great discussion!  Today I'll send home some information about these characters.
