Field Trip Tuesday, April 30th - The Building For Kids -
Our rescheduled children's museum field trip is this wee Tuesday.  Thank you to Mrs. Schleis, Mrs. Rasmussen, and Mrs. DeFrank - they can still come with us with the date switch!  We will be gone most of the day.  We will be leaving around 7:45/8:00 and returning around 2:15/2:30.  Every student will need a cold lunch on Tuesday.  Please make sure everything in the lunch is consumable - "a brown bag lunch".  Please pack the lunch in a brown bag, baggie, grocery store bag, etc.  All silverware should be plastic.  Please don't pack any Tupperware or containers.  When we are finished with lunch everything the children bring should be able to be thrown out or recycled.

Since I was gone to the NCEA Conference last week I don't have much to report.  Mrs. Waterstradt said she had a great time in first grade with the kids!

We did put our snails and guppies in our aquariums on Friday and we took our plants home so I have some pictures from science on Friday.

Have a great week!  :)

NCEA - This week Mrs. Anderson, Mrs. Schauer, Mrs. Parker, and I will be at the NCEA conference in Chicago Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.  Mrs. Waterstradt will be our substitute teacher.  We will all be back at school on Friday.  :)

Spelling - Due to the short week, we will not have a spelling list.

Building For Kids Field Trip - Reminder...our new date for the field trip is April 30th.  Please return your new permission slips.  Thank you!  :)

Talent Show - Wow!  Our kids are so talented!  The class did an amazing job!

Reading - This last week and this week our word work focus has been Bossy R words.  This week while I am gone the students will be working in centers.  When I get back on Friday we will meet in guided reading groups again.  The students love daily 5!

Phonics - We are working on two syllable words with two closed syllables.  This week we will also start working on two syllable words where one syllable is closed and one syllable is a vowel-consonant-e syllable.

Social Studies - We are up to 45 states!  Didn't the class do an awesome job singing Fifty Nifty at the talent show?  :)
Here are the 45 states we've learned about.  Only 5 more to go!

Science - In science we have now built our terrariums and our aquariums.  The aquariums have two types of water plants.  This week Wednesday we should be getting our next shipment of organisms - snails and guppies!  We have been watching our seeds grow!  Each day we water our plants and draw how our seeds/plants look on our planting cards.

Thursday - the beans finally popped above the soil

Thursday - pumpkin seeds

 Thursday - sunflower seeds

Thursday - pea seeds

I stopped at school on Saturday - What a difference from Thursday! - Beans and Pumpkins

Sunflowers and peas on Saturday!

Math - In math we have been working with the hundred chart.  We have been working on adding ten to a number.  We also worked on subtracting ten from a number, as well as adding one and subtracting one.  So if our number was 74, we added ten to it (84), subtracted 10 from it (64), added 1 to it (75) and subtracted 1 from it (73).

Religion - We focused on Holy Week!  We learned all about Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday.  We also worked with our virtue card responsibility.

Writing - We worked on acrostic poems this week.  Our next type of poems will be cinquain poems.

Have a great week!  :)

Spelling - Due to the short week, we will not have a spelling list this week.

Reading - Last week we continued to focus on synonyms and antonyms in word work.  This week and next week our word work focus is going to be r-controlled vowels.  (Bossy R)
In addition to daily five reading groups and centers we have been practicing our Wizard of Oz play.

The only dog costume I could find is my boys old Halloween costume of Scooby Doo.  Luke is not a fan - but wore it any way.  I'm still looking for something for him.  :)

Social Studies - I believe we are up to 39 states and capitals!

Phonics - We are working on two syllable words with two closed syllables.

Writing - We continue to work in writer's workshop.  There have been so many books created!  This week we will also work a little on poetry.  We are going to work on a few different types of poems - acrostic, cinquain, and diamonte.

Religion - We continue to focus on Lent - Pray, Fast, Give.  We will work on our Promise Paper about Easter this week.  We will watch our last Rice Bowl video this week.  This week Thursday our school will pray the Divine Mercy together.  Our new virtue card is responsibility.

Science - In science we talked about using our senses to observe.  We observed our four seeds - pumpkin, pea, kidney bean, and sunflower.  We took notes on all the seeds using our observing table.  We noted what we could see, smell, feel, and hear with the seeds. The next day we planted the seeds.  Each group planted one of the different types of seeds in their cups. After they planted, they wrote about their seed and they will be documenting by drawing how the seed is growing.  We call the planting journal their planting cards.  We built terrariums as well.  We went outside to collect leaves for one of the layers of the terrariums.  The layers are gravel, leaf litter, and soil.  Then we planted two woodland plants - moss and pine tree seedlings.

Talent Show - The talent show will be on Thursday afternoon at 1:15.   First grade will be performing 2 acts as a group.  They will be singing Fifty Nifty and dancing to The Kidz Bop Shuffle.

NCEA Convention - Every year NCEA (National Catholic Education Association) has a national convention.  This year it is in Chicago.  Since it is close, GRACE is having each school send representation.  Mrs. Anderson, Mrs. Schauer, Mrs. Parker, and myself will be representing Holy Cross.  The NCEA convention is April 23, 24, and 25.  The students will have a substitute for three days.  The first grade sub is going to be Mrs. Waterstradt.  I'm very familiar with Mrs. Waterstradt.  (I taught both of her children.)  The first graders will be in great hands!

The Building For Kids - The Building For Kids field trip has been rescheduled for Tuesday, April 30th.

Have a blessed Holy Week!
