Phonics - We have been working on vowel-consonant-e syllables.  This week we continue with that, but are now adding the suffix s to our words.

Reading - We just finished another round of running records and sight word checks.  We continue to work in reading groups and centers every day.  Last week our word work focus was synonyms and antonyms.  This week we are switching our word work focus to homophones.  (words that sound the same, but are spelled different and mean something different.  Ex. see and sea)

Kindergarten came in one day and we practiced reading centers with them -

NDA students came and read with us

Writing - We are so close to being finished with our non-realistic fiction stories.  This week we will share our stories.  In our next unit we will be learning about poetry.

Math - In math we have learned about measuring with non-standard units  - and then inches and feet.  We have been working on 9 facts.  We have learned that 9 facts are almost 10 facts.  We know the 10 facts.  We learned to say the answer to the 10 fact and then subtract 1.  For example, if 10 +7 = 17, then 9 + 7 = 16.

Religion - Each week we work on our Promise Paper.  Last week the Gospel was about Jesus appearing to the apostles after he had risen.  The theme we learned about was peace.  We also spent time making cards for our second graders as they celebrated their First Communion.  In virtues and values, we are focusing on honesty and self-control.  Our April BOLT traits are integrity and completing a task.  We have spent a lot of our time practicing for our mass.  Reminder, first grade has mass this Friday - April 26th.

Science - In our Animal Adaptations unit, we just completed our project.  The title of the project is - World Traveler.  Here is the description of the project -

To work on this project, as a class we brainstormed how a traveler from each environment would use these adaptations.  After that, we enlisted our fourth grade buddies to help us work on our posters.

The Arctic

The African Savanna

The Sahara Desert

The Amazon Rainforest

Adopt-A-Cow - We were able to join a live chat with our host farm.  We were able to hear from Farmer Pam all about Pixy!  When Pixy was born in September she was 33" and 103 pounds.  She is now 45" and 467 pounds!

We had 2 friends lose a tooth within minutes of each other!

We celebrated Luca's Birthday

Building For Kids Field Trip - We are going to The Building For Kids in Appleton on Tuesday, April 30th.  We are in need of chaperones.  Please let me know if you'll be able to help us out.  :)
Reminder - Every student will need a cold lunch.  Remember that everything must be consumable.  Pack a  "brown bag lunch".  Use plastic silverware, recyclable water bottles, etc.

Have a great week!
