Science - We continue to work on our animal adaptations unit.  This week we will be working on our problem.  We are learning about four environments - the arctic, the amazon rainforest, the desert, and the African savanna.  We will be thinking about the animal adaptions we have learned about and figuring out how to apply that to people.  If a person was traveling to each environment, what adaptations would they need to think about?

Religion - First grade is having mass on Friday, April 26th.  Mass parts went home.  Please practice, practice, practice the reading parts with your child!
We have been focusing on Lent and Easter.  Every day during Lent we watched a short 2-3 Brother Francis video.  Our Promise Papers have been focusing on Lent and Easter as well.
During Lent we had tasks to work on each week.  Our tasks were fasting from blurting and unkind words, saying the rosary, praying the divine mercy chaplet, decorating bags for meals, making cards for nursing homes, and fasting from being messy.  As a class, we completed all the tasks! The virtues we are working on are honesty and self control.  We have learned the Fruits of the Spirit - love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.  We learned a fun song to help us remember them!

Reading - In word work we have been learning about synonyms. (words that mean the same thing)  This week we will add antonyms to our word work centers.  (words that mean the opposite)  We are currently working on another round of running records.

Caroline, Anna, and Luca made a puppet show out of popsicle sticks.
They worked on the story of The Gingerbread Man in reading group and then
made the characters into puppets.

Phonics - We have been working on suffixes s, ed, and ing.  This week we are learning about a new syllable - the vowel-consonant-e syllable.  When you see this pattern, the e is silent and it makes the vowel in the word say it's name.  This week we will also be learning the letter/keyword/sounds for the long vowels.

Math - In math we have been adding coins and partners of 10.  We have also been working on place value.  (ones, tens, and hundreds)
