Phonics - We have been working on words that have the glued sounds -all, -am, and -an.  This week we will be learning about the suffix s.  A suffix is a letter or group of letters added to the end of a word.  The main part of the word is called the base word.  For example, in the word ships, ship is the base word and s is the suffix.  To mark a base word and a suffix, you underline the base word and circle the suffix.

Religion - This is our last week focusing on the virtues and values of trustworthiness and sincerity.  We will have October's BOLT awards on Wednesday.  In Friendzy our current theme is "It's Ok Not To Be Ok".  We reviewed the zones of regulation and the size of the problem.  We also started learning about the "thinkables" and "unthinkables".  The first unthinkable we are learning about is Rock Brain and the first thinkable we are learning about is Rex Flexinator.

Reading The Children's Bible

Science - In PLTW light and sound we worked on a light investigation.  We learned facts about lightning, shadows, reflection, and color.

Math - In math we worked on counting coins, counting by 2s, and subtracting 1 facts.

Reading - We continue to work on reading skills every day in daily 5.  Each day the students work on read to self, read to someone, listen to reading, work on writing, word work, and meeting in reading groups.

Spelling - Glued Sounds -all, -am, an
ball
tall
fall
call
ham
ram
Sam
fan
pan
man

Last week we learned our new glued sounds.  At that time I shared this spelling list with the students and sent it home.  We will have our spelling test this week on Thursday since we don't have school on Friday.

Phonics - We learned two more glued sounds -am and -an.

Religion - We continue to work on the virtue and value cards - focusing on trustworthiness and sincerity.  Our Promise Paper was from the book of Mark.  We learned about the Ten Commandments. We worked in our Promise books on ways to take care of the earth and take care of people.  We started our next Friendzy unit.  The theme is "It's Ok, Not To Be Ok".  This unit focuses on feelings and emotions.  This gave us a chance to review feelings and the zones of regulation.  This unit talks about sadness/grief and ways to handle it.  We also went to Adoration this last week.

Science - We explored color mixing.  We learned that
-when mixing red light and blue light, the light turned magenta,
-when mixing red light and green light, the light turned yellow,
-when mixing blue light and green light, the light turned cyan, and
-when mixing blue light and yellow light, the light turned green.
(Magenta is a purplish red.  Cyan is a greenish blue)
The most challenging light we had to make was green because we don't have a yellow slide.  We had to mix red and green to get yellow, then add blue to make the light turn green.

Math - In math we worked on -1 facts and counting by tens.  It's easy to count 10, 20, 30, etc.  We started with a number on the number line that didn't end with 0.  For example, we counted 8, 18, 28, 38, 48, etc.  That was a little more challenging.

Reading - In reading, we are working on rhyming and Halloween centers.  The Halloween centers are things like word searches and crossword puzzles.  It is reading a Halloween poem and filling in the missing words or taking each word from the poem and building the poem.  It is making words out of the letters in Halloween.  There are so many choices!
Each day the students are working on read to self, read to someone, listen to reading, work on writing, word work, and meeting with teacher in small reading groups.

Writing and Handwriting - We are working in journals to practice our writing.  We are focusing on using capitals and lower case letters correctly, using good spaces, using punctuation, and adding more details.  As we get more into first grade, we are working on writing more in our stories.  To practice our handwriting we practice writing our letters and words.  We are focusing on starting on the correct line, forming our letters the correct way, writing our letters on the correct lines, and writing neatly.

Adopt-A-Cow - This year we are again participating in the Adopt-A-Cow program.  We just learned in the last week that our farm is Schleis Farm in Kewaunee and our cow's name is Spot.  During our buddy time, we learned about different breeds of cows.  Our buddies helped us do some writing about our cow.

To find out more about Spot, you can download the Discovery Dairy app. On the app, click Adopt a Cow.  Then click on My Adopted Calf. Our calf code is Spot 2.

We will be getting updates every other month on Spot until May.

Spelling - We will not have a spelling list this week due to the short week.  We will be learning new glued sounds this week.  I will most likely share the next spelling list with the students later this week - as our next spelling list will be glued sounds.  The students will then have a test on the glued sounds next week.

Phonics - We have learned our first glued sound.  A glued sound is when letters are "glued together" to make a sound.  Our first glued sound is -all.  The keyword is ball.  Later this week we will be learning 2 more glued sounds.

Religion - This week our Bible story was Joseph and the Coat of Many Colors.  Our virtues and values for October are trustworthiness and sincerity.  We went through all of the trustworthiness cards and this week we will switch to the sincerity cards.  Our Promise Paper was from the Gospel of Mark.  It talked about Jesus and "Let the children come to me."

We had an author visit us.  Her name is Kristina Schoh and she wrote a book called Seek And You Will Find - A Catholic Sacraments Adventure.

Science - We are working through the light centers.  We learned that light also travels in waves.
